Park of 28 Panfilowzy
The Park of the 28 Panfilowzy ( Russian Парк имени 28-ми гвардейцев-панфиловцев ) is a park in the Kazakh city of Almaty . The approximately 18 hectare park was established in the 1870s. It is located in the Medeu district to the east of the city center.
The most famous buildings in the park are the Ascension Cathedral and the Museum of Folk Musical Instruments. There is also a memorial and monuments to Ivan Panfilov and Tokash Bokin.
history
After the city of Almaty was founded, a cemetery was located on the area of today's park, which was finally closed after the cathedral was completed and instead a park was converted in the same place in the 1870s.
The name of the park was renamed to Pushkin Park on the occasion of the 100th birthday of the Russian national poet Alexander Sergejewitsch Pushkin . By 1942 the name of the park was changed twice more before it got its current name Park der 28 Panfilowzy. This was renamed in honor of Ivan Panfilov and 28 Guards - infantry (called Panfilowzy ), which in November 1941 in the defensive battles before Moscow twice as many German tanks shall have barricaded against the attack by chance.
In 1975 the park was rebuilt and got a memorial for the fallen soldiers of the Second World War .
Buildings
Ascension Cathedral

The Ascension Cathedral was built from 1904 to 1907 in the center of the park. It is the cathedral of the Russian Orthodox Eparchy Almaty and Astana. The 56 meter high structure is the city's landmark and the second largest wooden structure in the world.
It was used as a museum after the Russian Revolution , and in the 1930s the building was used by various public organizations before being returned to the Russian Orthodox Church in May 1995 .
Museum of Folk Musical Instruments

The Museum of Folk Musical Instruments is located at the east end of the Park of 28 Panfilowzy and was opened in 1980. The building in which it is located, however, was built in 1908.
It houses more than a thousand exhibits and more than 60 different varieties of the Kazakh folk musical instruments used by famous Kazakh composers and singers.
Monuments
The monument to Soviet major general Ivan Panfilov was erected in 1968 on the north side of the park. The two meter high bust was cast from bronze .
To mark the 30th anniversary of the victory over the German Reich , a memorial was inaugurated on May 8, 1975 on the east side of the park. It consists of a flame, the "Eternal Fire", and a statue of Panfilov's soldiers.
The third monument in the park is dedicated to Tokash Bokin, a supporter of the establishment of Soviet power . It was set up in 1980. The monument is five meters high and made of gray granite .
