Nicola Cosimi (* 1667 in Loreto , † 1717 in Italy) was an Italian composer and violinist of the Baroque.

Life

Around 1683 Nicola Cosimi was a student of Arcangelo Corelli at the "Accademia di S. Cecilia" in Rome. From March 1701 to 1705 he traveled to England, where he stayed for a time with his friend, the cellist Nicola Francesco Haym , in London. This trip was funded by Wriothesley Russell, 2nd Duke of Bedford , who recognized the talent of the young violinist and his friend on a trip to Rome. In gratitude, Nicola Cosimi dedicated 12 violin sonatas to the nobleman, the style and structure of which correspond to Corelli's sonatas op. 5. During his time in London Nicola Cosimi gave numerous concerts, including two appearances at Windsor Castle. He did commissioned compositions and gave music lessons to members of noble families. He also dealt with instrument making, which enabled him to have a lucrative life.
