Nicola Francesco Haym

Nicola Francesco Haym (also Haim) (born July 6, 1678 in Rome , † July 31, 1729 in London ) was an Italian cellist , composer , librettist , theater manager and author of literary works.
Life
Nicola Haym came from a German family of musicians: his father Sebastian Haim, an instrument maker from Füssen in Bavaria , emigrated to Italy in the middle of the 17th century, settled in Rome and married the Roman Barbara Turpini. The first son Giovanni Antonio Haym was born there, who later lived in Rome a. a. worked as a freelance cellist.
Nicola Haym is considered a student of his older brother Giovanni Antonio, as well as Arcangelo Corellis, and is documented as a cellist in the orchestra of Cardinal Pietro Ottoboni between 1694 and 1700 . Haym received his first compositions from Ottoboni, including two oratorios , a motet and possibly a serenata . His trio sonatas , composed between 1698 and 1699, were published in Amsterdam in 1703 and 1704. In 1701 he traveled to London with his friend Nicola Cosimi , both of whom were first in the service of Wriothesley Russell, 2nd Duke of Bedforddes and James Brydges, 1st Duke of Chandos . Haym dedicated four solo sonatas with bass to the Duke, which were published in 1710. He then worked as a cellist at the Drury Lane Theater and the Queen's Theater , and as manager of his wife, singer Joanna Maria Baroness Linchenham.
From 1713 he wrote or edited numerous librettos on which Georg Friedrich Händel based his operas Flavio , Giulio Cesare , Ottone , Radamisto , Rodelinda , Siroe , Tamerlano , Teseo and Tolomeo .
From 1722 to 1728 he was secretary of the Royal Academy of Music after Paolo Antonio Rolli , and during this time he also worked as a librettist for Attilio Ariosti and Giovanni Battista Bononcini .
Shortly before his death, Haym was able to complete his six-volume General History of Musick , which has disappeared. In addition, the versatile Haym wrote a numismatic book on old English coins Del tesoro britannico parte prima , which was the first of its kind in England.
