Life

Marco Ricci probably got his first training from his uncle Sebastiano Ricci , with whom he worked successfully throughout his life and complemented each other, since Sebastiano's strengths were more in portrait painting , Marcos in stage scenery and landscape painting .

It is said that Ricci had to flee Venice as a young man because he killed a gondolier . So he went to Spalato , where he met Antonio Francesco Peruzzini from Ancona . From 1704 to 1708 he was in Florence and probably worked on the painting of the anteroom to the summer apartment in the Palazzo Pitti , a commission that Ferdinando de 'Medici's uncle had received. Marco was also involved in the commission to paint the Palazzo Fenzi with his own ceiling painting.

In 1708 Charles Montagu (Lord Manchester) stayed in Venice and invited him to London with Giovanni Antonio Pellegrini , where they were to paint stage sets for the Italian opera at the Queen's Theater on Haymarket on behalf of the theater manager Owen Swiny . He also painted the British prima donna Catherine Tofts there , who went to Venice in 1711. He traveled home in 1710 after studying in the Netherlands and brought his uncle to London. In 1716 they both returned to Venice. Tofts probably married the British businessman Joseph Smith in Venice in 1717 , and Smith became an important client for both painters. In the 1720s they had a number of commissions from the House of Savoy in Turin .

Ricci also designed sets for the Venetian theater, for example for the Teatro San Giovanni Grisostomo and the Teatro Sant'Angelo , based on his friend, the architect Filippo Juvarra . He invented tempera painting on goat skin . From 1723 he also made etchings , only 33 of which are known. In 1726 and 1727 he belonged to the Venetian painters' guild “Fraglia dei pittori”.
