history

As the population of Astana increased rapidly in the 1990s and there were only two Russian Orthodox churches in the city, the construction of additional churches became necessary. The Church's initiative was also supported by President Nursultan Nazarbayev himself. The city administration provided two pieces of land, with a new cathedral being built on Schumabaev Street.

In mid-2004, the first planning and exploration work began on the site. The actual construction work began in spring 2005. On January 14, 2006, the Metropolitan of Astana consecrated the foundation stone for the foundation of the cathedral, which is currently under construction. By April the construction work had progressed so far that the first service could be celebrated in the building on Easter. In January 2007, with the support of the city administration, a public fund was set up to finance the ongoing construction work and the completion of the cathedral. In addition, the building received its bells that year. The vault was built in 2008 . By Easter 2009, the outer walls were clad with white marble , windows and doors were installed and two gates to the site were built, which are decorated with domes. In August 2009 the five domes for the roof of the cathedral were consecrated.

On January 18, 2010 the cathedral was opened and consecrated by Cyril I , Patriarch of Moscow and all of Russia . Only after the opening of the building did the cathedral have an iconostasis . From October 2013 to April 2014 the ceiling and wall paintings were created. In 2013 the construction of the bell tower started. This was consecrated on November 26, 2016.
