The Floripa Airport ( IATA : FLN , ICAO : SBFL ; formerly Aeroporto Internacional de Florianópolis / Hercílio Luz ) is the largest of the three commercial airports in the Brazilian state of Santa Catarina . It is located on the island of Ilha de Santa Catarina and belongs to the urban area of Florianópolis .

history

On September 7, 1922, the airport was established for military purposes. In 1934, the first airliner from Rio de Janeiro landed on a grass runway . Until 1955, the airport had a control tower made of wood, a 1500 m long and 45 m wide concrete runway, a grass courtyard for aircraft parking and a passenger terminal built between 1952 and 1954. After 1955, the airport was repeatedly expanded and modernized. For example, on January 29, 1976 the inauguration of a cargo terminal was on the program. In 1976 a second runway began to be poured, which was put into operation on August 1, 1978. In 1995 the passenger terminal was also air-conditioned.

In January 2018, construction began on a new passenger terminal with a capacity of 8 million passengers per year. In contrast to the old passenger terminal, it is located south of runway 14/32 and is scheduled to go into operation in October 2019.

Airlines and Destinations

The airport is currently regularly connected by the airlines Azul Linhas Aéreas , Gol Linhas Aéreas , and LATAM Airlines Brasil with various national and international destinations on the South American continent.
