The Salvador Airport ( IATA : SSA ; ICAO : SBSV ; formerly Aeroporto Internacional de Salvador - Deputado Luís Eduardo Magalhães ) located 20 kilometers northeast of the center of Salvador in the Brazilian state of Bahia . In 2017, it took tenth place in the ranking of Brazilian airports by number of passengers.

The airport also marks the starting point of the Estrada do Coco . Bamboo was planted on the approximately 800 meter long access road , which has now grown to about twelve meters high.

Around 40,000 people pass through the terminal every day, 16,000 of whom are passengers.

Incidents

  • On May 15, 1973, a Vickers Viscount 827 of the Brazilian VASP ( aircraft registration PP-SRD ) fell off the runway in heavy rain when landing at Salvador airport. The landing gear collapsed and the aircraft was totaled. All occupants survived the accident.
