The airport Aeroporto Internacional de Manaus - Eduardo Gomes ( IATA code : MAO , ICAO code : SBEG ) serves the city of Manaus in the Brazilian state of Amazonas and the surrounding region. All types of aircraft except the A380 can fly to it. It is 9 kilometers north of the center of Manaus and is only connected to the city by buses or taxis. The special importance of the airport for the region arises from the fact that it can otherwise only be reached via a single road-overland connection and shipping lines.

Manaus SBEG

history

On March 26, 1976, the airport was officially opened with a passenger terminal and a freight terminal. At that time it was the most modern airport in Brazil as it was the first airport with movable fingers . At that time it was also called Aeroporto Supersônico . In 1980 a second freight terminal was added, and later another passenger terminal. In 2004 the third freight terminal was opened.

Airport facilities

Terminals

Terminal 1

Terminal 1 ( TPS-I ) is the airport's much larger terminal at 43,659 square meters. Both the international and the most important domestic flights are handled here. It is used by American Airlines , Azul Linhas Aéreas , Copa Airlines , Gol Linhas Aéreas , LATAM Airlines Brasil and Total Linhas Aéreas .

Terminal 2

Because Terminal 2 ( TPS-II ) is only 2607 square meters, only regional and smaller national flights are processed here. It is currently used exclusively by MAP Linhas Aéreas .

Airlines and Destinations

There are no direct flights to Manaus from German-speaking countries. Transfer connections with LATAM lead via Rio or Sao Paulo . A connection with the Portuguese TAP via Lisbon is planned from June 2014. The Brazilian low-cost airline Gol also flies to Manaus; here, however, a change of airport in Rio or Sao Paulo is necessary.

Around 2.6 million passengers are handled here every year. This makes the airport the busiest airport in northern Brazil. In terms of passengers, it is the fifth largest in the whole country, and even the second largest in terms of freight. Lufthansa has been serving the Brazilian metropolis of Manaus since January 21, 2011. With two weekly flights from Frankfurt am Main, Manaus will then be approached with an MD-11 from Lufthansa Cargo. Every Monday and Friday, it goes to the metropolis in the Amazon basin with stops in Dakar and São Paulo - Viracopos. The return flight via Quito and Bogota with a technical stopover in Curacao leaves Manaus on Tuesdays and Saturdays.
