The Pinto Martins International Airport - Fortaleza is the airport in Fortaleza , Brazil . It is named after Euclides Pinto Martins (1892-1924), an aviator who was born in Ceará and who in 1922 was one of the pioneers of the air link between New York City and Rio de Janeiro . The airport shares some of its facilities with the Brazilian Air Force's Fortaleza Air Force Base .

history

The origin of the airport lies on a runway built in the 1930s that was used by the Ceará Flying School until 2000 .

During World War II, the airport was an important Allied base supporting operations in the South Atlantic.

On May 13, 1952, the original name, Cocorote Airport , was changed to its current name. In 1966 a passenger terminal and an apron were built. These facilities are now used by general aviation.

From January 7, 1974 to December 31, 2017, the airport was operated by Infraero and upgraded to the international category in 1997.

In February 1998 a new passenger terminal was opened in the south. On 31 August 2009 presented Infraero an investment plan amounting to 525 million Real (276.6 million US dollars , 193.8 million euros ) for upgrading the international airport, with emphasis on the preparations for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. Fortaleza was one of the venues. The investment was estimated for the renovation and expansion of the passenger terminal, the apron and the parking lot with completion in November 2013, but was discarded; instead, only a makeshift tent was set up.

Through a partnership between Infraero, the federal government and the federal states, the 35,000 m² passenger terminal was built by Governor Tasso Jereissati in February 1998 with a capacity of 3.8 million passengers per year, 14 aircraft parking spaces and automation, which led to international classification in 1997 (Portaria 393 GM5 dated June 9, 1997). On March 16, 2017, the airport was auctioned to the Frankfurt Fraport consortium for 425 million reals for use for 30 years. The contract, signed on July 28, 2017, provides for the completion of Infraero's investments in the passenger terminal and the extension of the runway.

On January 2, 2018, Infraero handed over the operation of the airports in Fortaleza and Porto Alegre to Fraport.
