The VASP Flight 168 (Flight number: VP168 ) was a scheduled domestic flight of the airline Viação Aérea São Paulo from São Paulo-Congonhas to Fortaleza airport with a stopover at the airport of Rio de Janeiro-Galeão . On June 8, 1982, a Boeing 727-212 with the aircraft registration number PP-SRK was flown into a mountain on this flight after the captain ignored both the warnings of the ground proximity warning system and those of the first officer. All 137 occupants were killed in the accident.

At the time, it was the worst incident in Brazil. As of July 2020, it is the third heaviest after TAM Linhas Aéreas flight 3054 and Gol Transportes Aéreos flight 1907 .

plane

The aircraft involved in the accident was a Boeing 727-212, which was 4 years and 11 months old at the time of the accident. The machine was assembled at the Boeing plant in Renton , Washington State , and made its maiden flight on July 23, 1977, before being delivered to Singapore Airlines on August 30 of the same year . The Viação Aérea São Paulo took over the machine on June 6, 1980. The aircraft had the factory number 21347, it was the 1282nd Boeing 727 from ongoing production. The machine was certified with the aircraft registration PP-SRK . The three - engine narrow -body aircraft was equipped with three Pratt & Whitney JT8D-17 engines.

the accident

The first part of the flight went without any special incidents. When approaching Fortaleza at night, the pilots were given clearance to descend from 33,000 feet (approx. 10,000 meters) to 5,000 feet (approx. 1500 meters). As they descended, the pilots could see the lights of the city. The captain steered the machine below the instructed altitude. The captain continued the descent anyway, even when the first officer pointed out his mistake to him. The ground proximity warning system was then activated. The machine finally crashed 30 kilometers from Fortaleza and 750 meters above sea level against the Serra de Aretanha mountain.
