The VASP Flight 780 (Flight number: VP780 ) was a cargo flight of the airline Viação Aérea São Paulo from Rio Branco airport to airport Cruzeiro do Sul . On June 22, 1992, a Boeing 737-2A1C with the aircraft registration PP-SND was steered into the ground on this flight after the crew was repeatedly distracted by a warning tone for a fire warning in the cargo compartment. All three occupants were killed in the accident.
Airplane and occupants
The aircraft involved in the accident was a Boeing 737-2A1C, which was 16 years and 6 months old at the time of the accident. The machine was assembled at the Boeing plant in Renton , Washington state , and made its maiden flight on December 22, 1975, before being delivered to Viação Aérea São Paulo in January 1976. The aircraft had the factory number 21188, it was the 444th Boeing 737 from ongoing production. The machine was certified with the aircraft registration PP-SND . The twin- engined , narrow -body aircraft was equipped with two Pratt & Whitney JT8D-17 engines.
The master, the first officer and a loadmaster were on board.
the accident
The flight from Rio Branco had passed without any special incidents up to the approach to Cruzeiro do Sul. The crew had received clearance to land on runway 10. During the descent, the warning signal of a fire warning for the cargo compartment sounded several times and with interruptions. Distracted by the warning sound, the pilots steered the aircraft into the jungle at around 6:05 a.m. local time.
