The VASP Flight 012 (Flight number: VP012 ) was a scheduled domestic flight of the airline Viação Aérea São Paulo from the Airport and Rio de Janeiro Santos Dumont to Belo Horizonte . On August 23, 1973, a NAMC YS-11 had an accident on this flight , which crashed into Guanabara Bay after an aborted take-off , killing eight people on board.

plane

The machine was a twin-engine turboprop passenger plane of the type NAMC YS-11 made in Japan . The machine had the factory number 2068 and had made its first flight in 1968. The machine was equipped with two Rolls-Royce Dart turboprop engines . The YS-11 was certified with the aircraft registration PP-SMJ and was given the name Cidade de Cuiabá .

the accident

During the take-off run of the machine, there was a brief loss of performance 8 knots (approx. 15 km / h) before reaching the decision speed . The temperature display for the turbine exhaust gases then rose to the maximum value. The captain immediately initiated an aborted take-off. He took the thrust back, depressed the brake pedal and activated the thrust reverser.

As the braking performance was insufficient despite all the measures taken, the emergency brakes were activated. The emergency brake only worked on the right main landing gear. When the captain realized 80 meters from the end of the runway that overshooting was imminent, he retracted the landing gear so that the machine hit the runway with its hull and continued to slide on it. The rollover could not be prevented, however, the machine fell 100 meters behind the end of the runway onto the rocks and into the water of Guanabara Bay .

Victim

The five-man crew and 52 passengers survived the accident, while 8 passengers were killed.
