BR-116 is a federal highway in Brazil . It is one of the most important highways in Brazil. At 4885 km it is the second longest, it connects Fortaleza , Ceará , one of the largest metropolises in northeastern Brazil, and the southern city of Jaguarão , Rio Grande do Sul , on the border with Uruguay .
Directions
The BR-116 runs north to south along the Brazilian coast. It is arguably the most important and busiest Brazilian highway. Some sections of the route have their own names.
The section between Curitiba , São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro is very busy. The route between Curitiba and São Paulo is also known as Rodovia Régis Bittencourt, nicknamed “Rodovia da Morte” (Highway of Death) due to the numerous accidents caused by the unstable weather conditions in the region. The section between São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro is officially named Rodovia Presidente Dutra, this section is the busiest, it runs in or near 15 cities with over 200,000 inhabitants.
The most important cities that are served directly by the BR-116 motorway are: the metropolises of Fortaleza, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Curitiba, and Porto Alegre ; other important cities are Salgueiro , Feira de Santana , Vitória da Conquista , Teófilo Otoni , Governador Valadares , Volta Redonda , São José dos Campos , Lages , Caxias do Sul , Canoas and Pelotas .
