Jaguarão , officially Portuguese Município de Jaguarão , is a city in the state of Rio Grande do Sul in southern Brazil .

Geography and location

Jaguarão is located in the south of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, directly on the border between Brazil and Uruguay, opposite the Uruguayan city ​​of Río Branco on the Rio Jaguarão / Río Yaguarón . The international bridge Puente Internacional Barón de Mauá connects the two cities and the BR-116 (Brazil) and Ruta 18 (Uruguay) highways that end there . The entire municipal area of Jaguarão, which is around 350 km from Porto Alegre , covers an area of ​​around 2,051 km².

history

Jaguarão was founded as Vila in 1832 and received city rights as Cidade in 1855.

politics

Mayor (Prefeito) has been José Claudio Ferreira Martins from PT since 2004 . In the local elections on October 7th and 28th (2nd ballot) 2012 he was re-elected with 54.82% of the votes cast in the first ballot.

The next local elections in Brazil took place in 2016. With 47.26% of the valid votes for the term of office 2017 to 2020, Flavio Telis of today's Movimento Democrático Brasileiro (MDB) prevailed as city prefect.

Residents
