Aldyr Garcia Schlee (born November 22, 1934 in Jaguarão ( RS ); † November 15, 2018 in Pelotas (RS)) was a Brazilian writer , journalist , translator and illustrator . He was also known as the inventor of the Brazilian national soccer team's uniform .

Life

The doctor of the Ciências Humanas ( humanities ) has published six books of his own with short stories and has been involved in various anthologies with short stories and essays. His works, published in Portuguese or Spanish , often deal with relations with the neighboring country Uruguay , on whose border he grew up, as well as the Gaúcho culture of his home state Rio Grande do Sul . He worked for the newspaper Última Hora as a reporter and editor and was one of the founders of the Institute of Journalism of the Universidade Católica de Pelotas , the Catholic University of Pelotas . Later he was professor of international law at the Universidade Federal de Pelotas .

Schlee became known at the age of 19 when he won a design competition for the jersey for the Brazilian national soccer team in 1953 . After losing to Uruguay at the 1950 World Cup , the Brazilian association decided to abolish the traditional white jerseys. A competition for new playing clothes was announced. The new jerseys should contain the national colors. Schlee won the competition out of 201 applicants; his idea: yellow jerseys like canaries, sky blue pants, white socks with blue applications. Schlee received the equivalent of around 8,000 euros and a study trip to the Correio da Manhã newspaper in Rio de Janeiro , during which he met well-known contemporary journalists. A spicy detail on the side: Schlee, who was born just 200 meters from the Uruguayan border, was a supporter of the Uruguayan team.

In 2008 Schlee lived in Capão do Leão near Pelotas. He had three sons and three grandchildren; In his spare time he played Futebol de Botão , the button football game popular in Brazil, comparable to the Austrian Pfitschigogerl .
