The Brazilian federal highway BR-101 is a 4772.4 km long trunk road running from north to south . It extends from the city of Touros in the state of Rio Grande do Norte to the city of São José do Norte in the state of Rio Grande do Sul along almost the entire east coast of Brazil. The BR-101 is one of the most important federal highways in Brazil.
It runs through twelve Brazilian states, namely Rio Grande do Norte, Paraíba , Pernambuco , Alagoas , Sergipe , Bahia , Espírito Santo , Rio de Janeiro , São Paulo , Paraná , Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul. Most of it is run under the name Rodovia Governador Mario Covas .
The following major cities are on or near the BR-101 (from north to south): Natal , João Pessoa , Recife , Maceió , Aracaju , Salvador , Vitória , Rio de Janeiro , Santos , Florianópolis .
