history
In the past canoes were made in the place, so that the train station opened in 1874 got the catchy name Canoas, in German "Canoes". Canoas became a city in 1939. A district of the city became independent in 1992 under the name Nova Santa Rita .
Canoas is part of the metropolitan area of Porto Alegre and has the second highest gross domestic product (GDP) in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. There is a university and two Centros Universitários (university-like universities widespread in Brazil, but without a research contract). Canoas is characterized by a wide variety of branches in industry and in the service sector .
The resulting increase in population led to a lack of housing. In addition, Canoas has a high crime rate in comparison with Brazil, but it is lower than in the nearby Porto Alegre. In 2016, 109 murders took place in Canoas, compared to 705 in Porto Alegre.
City administration
Since the first appointed city prefect (executive) Edgar Braga da Fontoura, who took office on January 15, 1940, 24 mayors have held this office until the 2016 local elections, most recently Luiz Carlos Busato was elected by the Partido Trabalhista Brasileiro (PTB) for the 2017 to 2020 term of office . The legislature lies with a city council, the Câmara Municipal, made up of 21 elected city councilors ( vereadores ) under the presidency of Juares Carlos Hoy (PTB).
