Beet pig
Rübenschwein is an old Low German swear word . It is guaranteed in traditional poetry (De Groffschmitt) . The distribution extends into the Westphalian- speaking area .
Today it is rarely heard in everyday North German language .
The original meaning of the term cannot be clearly clarified; While the Duden refers to the soldier's language for the origin (= front soldier who lies in cover in a beet field) and thus establishes a proximity to the soldier's language of the 20th century. B. the use in the old Low German / Westphalian folk song De Groffschmitt to an earlier origin of the word as well as a reference to the agricultural world:
From serve Wessel get dat Muul
du Aas, you Beest, you Röbenschwien ...
This means a coarse human being.
Different spellings are permitted according to regional usage (Röbensvin, röbenschwien, rööbensvien) .
In the language of National Socialism, Alfred Hugenberg figured as "the old turnip pig".
