The Ljubljana airport (total Slovenian name letališče Jožeta Pučnika Ljubljana " Jože Pučnik -airport Ljubljana"; common abbreviation letališče Brnik , "Brnik Airport") is the international airport of the Slovenian capital Ljubljana (Ljubljana). It is located 26 km north of the city center of Ljubljana and 7 km southeast of Kranj (Krainburg) near the village of Brnik.
history
On January 9, 1964, Ljubljana Airport began operating with four flight connections (to London , Belgrade , Dubrovnik and Algiers ).
In June 1971 the German airline Lufthansa began to fly to the airport with cargo flights from Frankfurt.
Since in the period from 1974 to 1978, the airport of Zagreb will be closed for extensive renovations needed, the Ljubljana airport was served temporarily increased. This resulted in a doubling of the number of passengers.
Due to the war in Yugoslavia , the airspace over Yugoslavia was closed on June 26, 1991 , which resulted in a temporary shutdown of the airport. The opportunity was used to carry out extensive renovation work at Ljubljana Airport. After operations resumed in February 1992, the number of passengers was minimal due to the break-up of Yugoslavia.
Aerodrom Ljubljana has been a joint stock company since January 28, 1997, and its shares are traded on the Ljubljana Stock Exchange.
In 2001, a summit between George W. Bush and Vladimir Putin took place in Ljubljana . Therefore, the airport was in a state of emergency, as it had to be closed for security reasons to ensure the safe arrival of the Russian and American delegations.
In 2002 a meeting of the presidents of the 16 most important European countries took place in Ljubljana , to which the delegations were again received under high security precautions at Ljubljana Airport .
On March 16, 2015, the German Fraport AG took over 100% of Ljubljana Airport. In 2014, 75.5% already took over. Today the airport operator works under a new logo and the name Fraport Slovenija.

Remodeling work
The airport has been expanding since mid-2006. Eight passenger boarding bridges and an industrial and logistics complex with a hotel, a shopping center, a new multi-storey car park and a modified street layout have already been built. A rail connection to Ljubljana is also being planned.
In December 2011 it was announced that a second terminal would be built by 2015 [obsolete] . The first terminal had already been completed by July 2007 in order to meet the requirements of Slovenia's accession to the Schengen area .
In April 2017, the airport operator Fraport Slovenia announced that they would expand the passenger terminal. In the first phase, the capacity will be increased from the current 500 to 1.125 passengers per hour. Another 10,000 m 2 will be connected to the west of the existing terminal. This area will have a large duty free shop, a new business lounge, a new aircraft bridge and a renovation of the food & beverage and sales areas. In addition, 22 new check-in counters and 5 security controls will be created. In addition, the baggage acceptance area is being expanded, including 3 carousels.
The foundation stone for the terminal was laid in July 2019, so that construction should be completed in summer 2021. The entire terminal should therefore cover an area of 28.587 m 2 .
The Slovenian government is currently considering building a regional train station.
