The Maribor Airport ( Slovenian : letališče Maribor ) is a regional airport in Slovenia and after the Ljubljana airport is the second largest in the country. It is located ten kilometers south of the city center of Maribor near the village of Slivnica .
The airport was opened in June 1976 and the airline Inex- Adria Airways was able to count on many customers from Austria because it offered far cheaper flights to other European countries than Austrian Airlines .
After that, only the Austrian airline Styrian Spirit flew to Maribor in regular service. Up until the filing of bankruptcy on March 24, 2006, a flight via Salzburg to Paris was offered.
Between June 5, 2007 and the end of the 2007/08 winter flight planning period, Ryanair offered a scheduled connection to London-Stansted , which was served three times a week.
This connection was resumed by Adria Airways on June 1, 2015 as a seasonal connection (until September 30, 2015). However, London Southend Airport was now served .
There were also seasonal flight connections with Air Malta to Valletta , with Aegean Airlines to Kos and Rhodes as well as a few other charter flight connections.
In addition, the airport is still used by flight schools, for private planes and for freight traffic.
