Air Malta ( also airmalta in the corporate design ) is the national airline of Malta , based in Luqa and based at Malta Airport . There is no connection with the to Ryanair belonging to Malta Air .

history

Air Malta was founded in 1973 following a resolution by the Maltese Parliament and began flight operations in April 1974. In the first few years, Boeing 720B shaped the fleet.

From the early 1990s until the fall of 2004 one was operating subsidiary called Malta Air Charter , temporarily as Gozo Wings known comprising a plurality of wet lease -operated Mil Mi-8 - helicopters a shuttle service to the neighboring island of Gozo . Air Malta also has a stake in Medavia , which operates turboprop aircraft mainly within Libya to support the oil industry.

In July 2012 the European Commission approved a state aid package for Air Malta amounting to 130 million euros . In the same month Air Malta presented its new corporate design , which also includes a completely new color scheme for the aircraft and a new logo. As part of its restructuring, Air Malta sold its British tour operator “Holiday Malta” to a Maltese company in September 2012.

In April 2016, Alitalia announced its intention to buy a 49% stake in Air Malta. This letter of intent was withdrawn in January 2017.

Air Malta took delivery of its first A320neo in June 2018.

Destinations

Air Malta serves important European city ​​destinations from Malta Airport , as well as Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates . Air Malta also offers charter flights .

In the German-speaking area, there are flights to Berlin-Tegel , Düsseldorf , Frankfurt , Hanover , Hamburg , Leipzig / Halle , Munich and Stuttgart in Germany, Vienna in Austria and Geneva and Zurich in Switzerland.

Incidents

Air Malta has had two major incidents in its history:

  • On June 9, 1997, a Boeing 737-200 ( 9H-ABF ) on Air Malta Flight 830 from Malta to Istanbul with 74 passengers and six crew members was hijacked by two Turkish hijackers. They demanded the release of Mehmet Ali Ağca . The hijacking of the machine ended in Cologne , all passengers got away with the horror.
