The Skopje International Airport is the main airport Nordmazedoniens . It is located 20 km southeast of the capital Skopje in the municipality of Petrovec and is the only other international airport in the country alongside Ohrid Airport.
The airport is used for both civil and military aviation . In addition to the North Macedonian army , NATO also uses part of the airfield . The military air traffic is organized by the French army . The German Air Force has stationed an air handling train at the airport, which regulates the transport of people and materials to and from Kosovo . In addition to the two-story main terminal, the airport also has a cargo terminal.
The airport was temporarily named after Alexander the Great . As part of the settlement of the dispute over the name of Macedonia with Greece , it was renamed in early February 2018 and received its current name.
The framework agreement with the Turkish airport operator TAV is designed for 20 years and ends in 2030.
Airlines and Destinations
Skopje has non-stop flights from German-speaking countries: Austrian Airlines has been flying up to twice a day from Vienna since 1996 , while Swiss flies several times a week from Zurich . The Hungarian low-cost airline Wizz Air flies to Skopje several times a week from Basel , Berlin-Schönefeld , Dortmund , Friedrichshafen , Hahn , Cologne / Bonn , Hamburg , Memmingen and Nuremberg . Helvetic Airways flies from Zurich .
There are daily connections to Istanbul with Turkish Airlines , Ljubljana with Adria Airways , Zagreb with Croatia Airlines , Belgrade with Air Serbia and Rome with Alitalia .
In addition there are connections to: Istanbul with Pegasus Airlines and Beauvais , Bergamo , Charleroi , Eindhoven , Gothenburg / Landvetter , London – Luton , Malmö , Stockholm – Skavsta , Treviso with Wizz Air . Flydubai from Dubai has been operating the route from Dubai to Skopje since July 2012 (as of January 2014).
Up until the end of flight operations on May 20, 2009, the Macedonian airline Macedonian Airlines MAT connected the city with many European cities.
Transport links
The airport is located immediately to the west of the M 1 motorway , where it has its own junction. There is also a bus line to the capital Skopje, which has adapted the timetable to the arrival and departure of aircraft. In addition to taxis, there are also several car rental companies at the airport.
Incidents
- On October 22, 1951, a Douglas DC-3 / C-47A-20-DK of JAT - Jugoslovenski Aerotransport ( aircraft registration YU-ACC ) had an accident on the flight from Belgrade near the destination Skopje. Twelve people were killed in the accident.
- On July 24, 1992, an Antonov An-12BK operated by Volga-Dnepr Airlines (CCCP-11342) was approaching Skopje Airport when a severe thunderstorm contracted. The pilots tried to avoid the thunderstorm, but lost their orientation because they did not know their exact position due to the non-functional DME of their destination airport. The machine was flown against a mountain near Tetovo at an altitude of 1600 meters, all 8 occupants were killed (see also the Volga-Dnepr Airlines flight accident near Tetovo ) .
- On March 5, 1993, a Fokker 100 of Palair Macedonian Airways taking off from Skopje airport began to vibrate heavily and crashed behind the runway after several strong tilting movements; 83 of the 97 passengers lost their lives. The reason for the accident was the lack of aircraft de-icing (see also Palair-Macedonian Airways flight 301 ) .
