history

The first project to build a motorway in North Macedonia was presented in 1966. It was part of the Autoput Bratstvo i jedinstvo , which connected the borders of Yugoslavia with Austria and Italy with those with Greece. It led through the entire federation and connected four of the six republics with Central Europe.

In 1980, the approximately 115 kilometer long Kumanovo - Veles - Negotino - Demir Kapija section was opened, making it the first motorway in North Macedonia. Later it was supplemented by a connection to Skopje and Skopje Airport . Much later, after the independence of North Macedonia in 1991, the sections Kumanovo - Tabanovce (border with Serbia) and Smokvica - Gevgelija ( border with Greece ) were added.

In 2000, the Skopje - Tetovo - Gostivar line was opened. And in 2008 the Skopje northern bypass was opened to traffic.

A motorway has been under construction between Kičevo and Ohrid since February 2014 .

In North Macedonia, the Pan-European Transport Corridors VIII and X cross , which connect the neighboring countries Serbia and Greece or Albania and Bulgaria .

A1 (old M1)

The A1 is down to a property under construction, 28.8 km section completed and open to traffic as a motorway. In 2007 a contract was signed with Serbia and Greece , which provides for the expansion of the entire Belgrade - Thessaloniki axis into a motorway.

A2 (old M2 and M4)

The A2 is part of the Pan-European Transport Corridor VIII, which is to connect Albania ( Durrës and Vlora ) and Bulgaria ( Burgas and Varna ).

On the Bulgarian side, the plan has been approved by the government and should be largely completed by 2013. On the Albanian side of the corridor, the axis has been expanded into a new expressway, with sections being expanded into a motorway.

The M4 between Tetovo and Gostivar (2010)

The middle section of the A2 from Miladinovtsi to Gostivar has been completed as a motorway. The other section to the Albania border is a winding national road that is mainly used by summer tourists visiting Ohrid and Struga .

The northern section of the A2 between Kriva Palanka and Kumanovo is to be converted into an expressway up to the Bulgarian border.

Skopje bypass

This section of the motorway relieves the city center of heavy traffic and also shortens the travel time on the Pan-European Corridor No. VIII considerably. The route is 27 kilometers long and is currently the most modern motorway in North Macedonia. It opened at the end of June 2009.

A4 (old M3 and M6)

The A4 is a well-developed national road from Skopje to Kosovo to the north . A completely new motorway is currently being built between Miladinovtsi and Stip. It is one of the most important economic traffic axes in North Macedonia and connects the growing industrial city of Stip to the south and Kosovo to the capital to the north. In the further course of the road from Stip to Strumica, the existing national road will be fundamentally renovated and expanded into an expressway.

A3 (old M5)

The A3 is about 300 kilometers, the longest national road Nordmazedoniens and extends in the east-west direction. But it does not contain a single kilometer of motorway.
