Gevgelija ( Cyrillic Гевгелија , Albanian Gjevgjelia, Greek Γευγελή Gevgelí ) is a city in the Bojmija region in southeastern North Macedonia and the capital of the Opština of the same name .

The city of Gevgelija is located about two kilometers north of the Greek border nordmazedonischen , west of the motorway A 1 (part of European route E75 ) and the railway line Athens - Belgrade , on the right bank of the river Vardar (Axios gr.). Nearby are the Koruf and Pajak mountains . Gevgelija is located around 70 km northwest of Thessaloniki , around 165 km southeast of the north Macedonian capital Skopje and 6 km northwest of the Greek border town Evzoni .

The area of the Opština covers 483.43 km² with 17 villages.

Gevgelija has been connected to the railway network since 1873 . This year the Chemins de fer Orientaux opened its route from Thessaloniki to Üsküb, today's Skopje . Since the border was drawn as a result of the Balkan Wars in 1912/13, Gevgelija station has been the border station to Greece. The counterpart on the Greek side is the Idomeni train station .

Today, the railway Tabanovci-Gevgelija the highway of nordmazedonischen railway and part of the Pan-European Transport Corridor X . However, the traffic is rather weak. The 2019 timetable provides for only one train across borders - and this is seasonally limited to the summer months. In addition, two connections with Skopje were offered.

Street

The A1 Avtopat runs east of the city and connects to the Greek Aftokinitodromos 1 at the Bogorodica / Evzoni border crossing southeast of Gevgelija . Both motorways form part of the central north-south connection of the Balkan Peninsula.

Refugee crisis

In the course of the refugee crisis in Europe since 2015 , the government of Macedonia (then under Nikola Gruevski ) had a border fence built to the left and right of the border crossing to Greece in November 2015 .
