Valandovo ( Macedonian Валандово ) is a city in southeastern North Macedonia in the Bojmija region . The city of Valandovo is the seat of the Opština of the same name .
geography
Valandovo is located in the south-east of North Macedonia, near the border with Greece and Bulgaria . Through the city flows anská Reka , a tributary of the Vardar .
history
For the first time the city is mentioned in a document of Prince Stefan Uroš IV. Dušan on June 12, 1349 under the name Alawandow .
The Ottoman writer Evliya Çelebi describes Valandovo in his travel book ( Seyahatnâme ) as a city with a small number of Muslims. In the 16th century, Valandovo was the center of a nâhiya in the Kaza Petritsch . According to Ottoman statistics (Ethnography des Vilayets d'Adrianople, de Monastir et de Salonique) from 1873, around 120 families lived in Valandovo.
The Valandovo affair took place on December 7, 1899 , in which more than 250 members of the BMARK from the region were arrested for revolutionary activities.
At the end of May 2009, the region around Valandovo was hit by several earthquakes. The strongest with 4.7 on the Richter scale was recorded near Valandovo, but only led to material damage.
