Kratovo ( Macedonian Кратово ) is a small town in northeastern North Macedonia . It is the capital of the Opština of the same name and is located in the northeast region .
Geographical location
Kratovo is located in the western foothills of the Osogovo Mountains in the narrow valley of the Kratovska Reka , a left tributary of the Kriva Reka . The small town lies at an altitude between 580 and 700 m. i. J. and is surrounded by wooded mountains.
population
Kratovo has 6924 inhabitants (as of 2002). The entire Opština Kratovo with 30 other villages, however, has 10,441 inhabitants (as of 2002). With 3,304 households that is an average of around three people per household. Ethnically speaking, the Opština is quite homogeneous in comparison with other countries. 10,231 inhabitants are Macedonians (98%), 151 are Roma (1.45%), 33 Serbs (0.32%), 15 Turks , 1 Wallachian and 17 others.
Attractions
Kratovo has a historic old town with many medieval churches and typical Balkan town houses. Characteristic are the stone towers, which were formerly used by miners and city guards. Six of the once twelve towers are still standing today. Another feature of Kratovo is the many stone bridges over the Kratovska Reka.
traffic
Kratovo is connected to Kumanovo , Štip , Kočani and Kriva Palanka by a national road. There is no railway in the city. The Skopje airport is about an hour away.
Sports
Sileks Kratovo is the city's home club and currently plays in the Prva Makedonska Liga .
