biography

Peter Hamecher attended high schools in Düren , Brühl and Euskirchen . Later he lived temporarily in Cologne and Berlin . He was active as a poet , essayist , author and editor ; In total he published 16 books as an author or editor and in numerous daily newspapers, especially in the Rhineland. He was also an employee of the theater magazine Masken , which was published by the Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus . His publications were strongly influenced by his interest in the works of gay authors, including Oscar Wilde , Stefan George , Herman Bang , Herbert Eulenberg and Wilhelm Schmidtbonn . In 1901 he published Between the Sexes , in which the 22-year-old openly acknowledged his homosexuality .

Around 1900 Peter Hamecher moved to Berlin and came into good contact with the homosexual activists Adolf Brand , Magnus Hirschfeld and their Scientific and Humanitarian Committee (WhK). Until 1929, with 45 articles, he was one of the closest employees of Brand's magazine Der Eigen . There he wrote: "In the storms of my 15 years it was when the image of love for friends with flaming colors appeared before my eyes for the first time and I lost all contact with women as a sex."

In 1903 Der Eigen was censored, drafted for “disseminating lewd writings” and Adolf Brand was sentenced to two months in prison. Hamecher's poem also played a role, but he was not convicted. In 1922 Brand was tried again for the same offense , and Hamecher was questioned as an expert .

In 1938 Hamecher succumbed to the effects of syphilis , from which he had suffered since 1914, in a nursing home in Berlin-Neukölln . “With his contacts to the community of his own and to the WhK, Peter Hamecher was a great and later even prominent pillar of the young homosexual movement. His openly homosexual demeanor impressed many. "
