Kočani ( Cyrillic Кочани ) is a city and capital of the Opština of the same name in North Macedonia , about 120 km east of Skopje .
geography
Kočani is located in the East region , 65 km from the Bulgarian border. The city lies along the north side of the Kočanital on the river of the same name. To the north of it is the 2252 m high mountain Osogovo , 8 km south of the 1754 m high Plačkovica .
history
Archaeological finds have shown that there were already settlements in what is now the city during the Roman and Byzantine empires. The town was first mentioned in 1337 when Jovan Oliver donated the Church of St. Dmitrij to Kočani. At the beginning of the 15th century, the city fell under Ottoman rule.
In the 19th century the city was the center of a Kaza of the same name . Around 1900 the population of the city was around 6,000.
Residents
According to the 2002 census, the municipality had 38,092 inhabitants, of whom 19,192 were male and 18,900 were female.
These were broken down by ethnic group:

- Roma 1,951
- Turks 315
- Wallachians 194
- Serbs 67
- 93 Others
The places outside the city belonging to the community were almost exclusively inhabited by Macedonians.
Culture
Kočani is the home of the Original Kočani Orkestar , an internationally known Balkan brass band.
Infrastructure
Kočani station is the end of the Veles – Kočani line and is served by a pair of trains to Skopje every day .
