The Skopje station ( Macedonian : Железничка станица Скопје) is the most important station of the nordmazedonischen capital Skopje . All local and long-distance traffic connections start there. The operator is the state-owned railway infrastructure company Makedonski Železnici Infrastruktura (MŽI).
Geographical location
The station forms the district boundary between the Centar and Aerodrom districts east of the center. The railroad facilities are in an elevated position. The bus station is located on the street level below, from where numerous domestic and international connections are offered every day.
history
old trainstation
The old Skopje train station was southwest of the city center. Its station building dates from 1940.
Large parts of the city were destroyed in the earthquake of July 26, 1963, killing over 1,000 people. The reception building was partially preserved and now serves as a museum for the city of Skopje. In the earthquake , a train entering the station derailed , killing 20 people.
New train station
After the earthquake, today's station was designed as a through station by the Japanese architect Kenzō Tange and completed in 1968. It is located east of the city center on an approximately two-kilometer-long bridge that first spans the Vardar when coming from the north and then joins the former ten-track train station. The construction is supported by many concrete pillars and roofed over by a platform hall that was considered futuristic in the 1960s.
Status
Today the station is structurally in poor condition. Much of the lighting in the station is defective, and many platforms are damaged, which leads to a negative appearance. The station is currently being renovated.
