Narrow gauge railway to Ohrid

Swell:

The Skopje – Kičevo railway is a railway line in the western part of North Macedonia .

Traffic geography

Gostivar train station

The route is the only one that leads to the west of the country. It branches off in the suburbs of Skopje at Gjorče Petrov station from the Pristina –Volkovo – Skopje line. In Sajas, a seven-kilometer route branches off to Tajmište, which is only served by freight traffic and only when required.

history

Route near Gjorče Petrov

The section between Skopje and Gjorče Petrov (and on to Blače ) is part of the line from Thessaloniki to Kosovska Mitrovica opened in 1874 by the Chemins de fer Orientaux (CO) . At that time the area still belonged to the Ottoman Empire . This was the first line to be built in what is now North Macedonia.

West of Gjorče Petrov originally there was a narrow-gauge line to Ohrid, which was opened in sections between 1916 and 1923 . Whose northern section has been on standard gauge umgespurt , partly realigned. The new standard gauge line was put into operation on May 25, 1952 to Gostivar and 1969 to Kičevo . The remaining narrow-gauge line was shut down and demolished in 1966. The re-tracked sections are:

  • Gjorče Petrov – Raduša,
  • Tetovo –Padalište and
  • Tajmište – Kičevo (in sections).

Technical parameters

The line is single-track and not electrified. The maximum gradient is 22 ‰, on the branch route to Tajmište even 27 ‰. The approximately seven kilometer long tunnel between Padalište and Zajas is the longest tunnel in the network of the North Macedonian railway.
