Zajas ( Macedonian Зајас ; Albanian Zajazi / Zajaz ) is a village in the Opština Kičevo in the west-central part of North Macedonia . The municipal capital Kičevo is nine kilometers to the south. Between 1996 and 2013, Zajas was the capital of the Opština of the same name , which was merged with that of Kičevo.
geography
The settlement area extends at an altitude between 740 and 800 meters above sea level. Zajas is traversed by some streams that arise in the western hill country.
Neighboring villages are in the north Midinci , northeast Bukojčani , in the East Gorno Strogomišta , south Kolibari , southwest Grešnica , west Rečani and northwest Bačišta .

Zajas has 4712 inhabitants (as of 2002). 4682 inhabitants were Albanians and 30 belonged to other ethnic groups. 4,689 stated Albanian and 23 other languages as their mother tongue. 4,687 were Muslims and 25 were of other religions.
economy
The majority of the population emigrated to Germany in the last few decades . Because of this large emigration and the lack of working population, jobs in the village are very rare. Most of the remaining work in livestock farming and vegetable growing. The production of honey also plays a major role. Some residents have also found work in the neighboring industrial centers of Gostivar and Kičevo .
traffic
Zajas is located on the M4 , which connects the capital Skopje with the western neighboring country Albania via Struga . The Skopje – Kičevo line of the North Macedonian Railway also runs through Zajas . At the Zajas train station, a branch line branches off to the neighboring Tajmište .
