The Bashkimi Demokratie për Integrim ( BDI , Macedonian Демократска Унија за Интеграција Demokratska Unija za Integracija , in German Democratic Union for Integration ) is the largest political party of the Albanian minority in North Macedonia and the third largest in the country. It was founded on June 5, 2002, immediately after the conflict in the country ended . The former commander of the KLA in North Macedonia, Ali Ahmeti , has been chairman since the party was founded .

ideology

The BDI sees itself as the guardian of the rights of the Albanians in North Macedonia . It is the direct successor organization of the militant UÇK (National Liberation Army), which was dissolved in 2002. Together with the Albanian Democratic Party , it is one of the strongest Albanian parties in North Macedonia.

history

In the parliamentary elections in 2002 she won 11.9 percent of the vote (70 percent of Albanians) and 16 out of 120 seats in parliament. The BDI entered into a coalition with the Social Democrats and the Liberal Democrats .

In 2006, the coalition between the BDI, the Albanian Party for Democratic Prosperity, and the Bosniak Democratic League won 12.2 percent of the total vote and 18 seats out of 120.

In 2008 new parliamentary elections were initiated because the Albanian Democratic Party (PDSH) withdrew from the alliance with the VMRO-DPMNE because it did not want to recognize the independence of Kosovo . In these elections, the BDI gained 12.8 percent of the vote and again 18 seats in parliament. It formed a coalition with the VMRO-DPMNE and became part of the government. The election campaign was overshadowed by a large number of attacks. The BDI suffered most of the attacks. For example, an attack was carried out on party chairman Ali Ahmeti and numerous BDI party offices were attacked. Ahmeti accused the rival PDSH and "Interior Ministry structures" for this. The small Albanian party PPD merged with the PDSH after the elections.

Even after the parliamentary elections in 2011 , the BDI remained in government. The VMRO-DPMNE had lost its absolute majority and was therefore even more dependent on a coalition partner. The BDI has 15 seats and has seven ministers in the government.

In the 2014 parliamentary elections, she won 19 of the 123 seats.

On June 5, 2014, Ali Ahmeti was re-elected party leader. The 675 delegates present voted unanimously for a further four-year term.

In April 2016, during a deep political crisis in the country, the party decided to remove all of its ministers in government. As a result, all ministerial posts belonging to the BDI were filled by new party members.
