The Social Democratic League of Macedonia ( Macedonian Социјалдемократски сојуз на Македонија Socijaldemokratski Sojuz na Makedonija ; acronym : SDSM ) is a political party in North Macedonia with a social democratic orientation. The SDSM is a full member of the Progressive Alliance and an associate member of the Social Democratic Party of Europe .

history

The SDSM was founded on April 20, 1991 as the successor party of the Association of Communists of Macedonia (maz. Sojuzot na Komunistite na Makedonija ).

The SDSM ruled North Macedonia from 1992 to 1998 and from 2002 to 2006 and again since 2017 in various coalitions and was the strongest and second strongest party in parliament. In the 2006 parliamentary elections, the party suffered a heavy defeat and joined the opposition. At the party conference on November 5, 2006, Radmila Šekerinska was elected as the new party leader after the party leadership had expressed its distrust of previous chairman Vlado Bučkovski after the poor election result. Between 2004 and 2009, Branko Crvenkovski was President of North Macedonia. After he no longer ran in the 2009 presidential election, he became party leader of the Social Democrats and held this office until April 2013. In the 2016 general election, the SDSM posted strong gains. However, it narrowly failed to replace the VMRO-DPMNE as the strongest party. After a difficult government formation as a result of the refusal of the President Gjorge Ivanov to give Zaev the mandate to form a government, an SDSM-led coalition with two Albanian parties began its work on May 31, 2017 and Zoran Zaev was elected head of government.

In the runoff election on May 5, 2019 , Stevo Pendarovski was elected as the new President.
