Zoran Zaev (2019)

Zoran Zaev ( Macedonian Зоран Заев ; born October 8, 1974 in Strumica , SFR Yugoslavia ) is a North Macedonian politician ( SDSM ). He was Prime Minister of his country from May 31, 2017 to January 3, 2020 and has been again since August 31, 2020.

Life

Zoran Zaev grew up with his younger brother in a traditional and agricultural family home. After finishing school, he studied and in 1997 received his first degree in economics from the University of Skopje . He then completed a master's degree in monetary theory at the same university. He then began to work in his uncle's company.

Political career

Zaev has been a member of the Social Democratic League of Macedonia (SDSM) since 1996 . From 2003 to 2005 he was a member of the Macedonian parliament , from 2005 to 2016 he was the mayor of his native Strumica. In September 2008 he succeeded Radmila Šekerinska as party leader of the SDSM. He was considered a transition candidate , who was succeeded by Branko Crvenkovski in May 2009 , when his term as President of Macedonia ended. Zaev has been vice chairman of the SDSM since then and its chairman since 2013.

Prime Minister

After the strongest party VMRO-DPMNE failed after lengthy negotiations with the formation of a new government, Zaev managed to reach an agreement between his party and the MPs of the BDI , the PDSH and other ethnic-Albanian minority parties . On May 31, 2017, 62 of the 120 members of parliament elected him as the new Prime Minister.

His work as head of government is primarily characterized by efforts to relax relations with the neighboring countries Bulgaria and Greece in order to accelerate Macedonia's accession to the EU and NATO . Through the improved cooperation with the neighbors within Europe and in the western alliance, it is hoped to be able to solve the problems in their own country better. A friendship and neighborhood treaty was signed with Bulgaria ; the name dispute with Greece was settled by the Prespa Agreement .

For his successful diplomatic efforts to settle the name dispute between the two countries, he and his Greek colleague Alexis Tsipras were honored with the Ewald von Kleist Prize at the Munich Security Conference 2019 . For the same reason, the two politicians were also awarded the International Peace of Westphalia Prize in 2020 , which was only awarded in August 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic .

Since the EU heads of state and government did not want to start negotiations on the accession of North Macedonia as previously promised, despite the settlement of the name dispute , his government came under domestic political criticism. In October 2019, he therefore announced new elections and his resignation; he resigned on January 3, 2020. On the same day, parliament unanimously elected a transitional government including members of the opposition and led by the previous Minister of the Interior, Oliver Spasovski . The parliamentary elections in North Macedonia 2020 did not take place until July 15, 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic in North Macedonia on April 12, 2020. The SDSM received 35.89% of the vote and became the strongest force ahead of the VMRO.

On the night of August 31, 2020, Zaev was re-elected Prime Minister of North Macedonia. He governs with a coalition made up of the social democratic SDSM and parties from the Albanian minority.
