Gjorge Ivanov (2012)

Gjorge Ivanov (alternative name form: Gjorgje , alternative transcriptions: Djorge Ivanov (Serbo-Croatian transcription), Georgi Ivanov and Djordje Ivanov , Cyrillic Ѓорге Иванов; * 2. May 1960 in Valandovo , SFR Yugoslavia , now Northern Macedonia ) is a nordmazedonischer political scientist and professor at the University of Skopje . From 2009 to 2019 he was president of his country.

Scientific career

Gjorge Ivanov grew up in the provincial town of Valandovo in the south-east of North Macedonia. He started at the University of “St. Kyrill und Method ” from Skopje studied law , which he graduated in 1982. From 1988 to 1995 Ivanov was employed by the North Macedonian Radio. At the same time, he wrote his master's thesis , which he completed in 1994.

Ivanov then continued his scientific career at the University of Skopje. In 1998 he received his doctorate , after which he was appointed assistant professor for political theory and political philosophy at the university. Four years later, Gjorge Ivanov became an Associate Professor and, in 2008, a Fulltime Professor in Skopje. He is a knight of honor of the Habsburg Order of St. George .

Ivanov is the author of numerous publications on political theory and in particular on the development of the political system in the Republic of North Macedonia. He is married and has two children.

Political career

Ivanov was already politically active in his youth; until the collapse of Yugoslavia in 1990 he was a member of the youth organization of the Union of Communists of Yugoslavia . Although he did not belong to any party after the founding of the Republic of Macedonia, he is close to the national-conservative party VMRO-DPMNE . After VMRO-DPMNE won the parliamentary elections in June 2006, Ivanov supported the Gruevski government as an advisor.

In January 2009, Gjorge Ivanov was nominated for the presidential election by VMRO-DPMNE. Since the incumbent President Branko Crvenkovski was not looking for any further candidacy and Gruevski had been able to rule with an absolute majority since the parliamentary elections of 2008 , Ivanov was considered the favorite for the presidential election. In the first ballot on March 22, 2009, Ivanov secured around 34% of the votes, but clearly missed the necessary absolute majority. In a runoff election on April 5, 2009, he faced the social democratic candidate Ljubomir Frčkoski , who achieved the second-best result of the seven presidential candidates with a share of the vote of almost 20%. Ivanov won the runoff election by a clear margin over Frčkoski. The required voter turnout of 40% was only just exceeded after representatives of the Albanian minority in North Macedonia called for a boycott of the presidential election. He took office on May 12, 2009.

Ivanov was confirmed in office in the presidential election in April 2014.

In April 2016, Ivanov pardoned all politicians who were being investigated for a corruption and wiretapping scandal. Nationwide protests arose as a result.

After two terms in office, Ivanov was no longer allowed to run for office. His successor was Stevo Pendarovski selected.
