Stevo Pendarovski (Macedonian: Стево Пендаровски; born April 3, 1963 in Skopje , SFR Yugoslavia ) is a North Macedonian political scientist and politician of the Social Democratic League of Macedonia (SDSM). He has been President of North Macedonia since 2019 .

Life

Stevo Pendarovski graduated from the University of Skopje with a degree in law and political science . From 1998 to 2001 he worked in the Macedonian Ministry of the Interior as head of the scientific department and as ministry spokesman. From 2001 to 2004 he was National Security Advisor to the then President Boris Trajkovski , then until 2005 head of the State Electoral Commission. From 2005 to 2009 he was foreign policy advisor to then President Branko Crvenkovski .

Since 2008 he has been Professor of Political Science at the University American College Skopje .

In the election on December 11, 2016 , Pendarovski was elected as a candidate of the SDSM as member of the Macedonian Parliament . He resigned from parliament on December 22, 2017, followed by Dalibor Bogdanovski . Pendarovski then worked as the coordinator for North Macedonia's NATO membership .

Stevo Pendarovski had already stood as a candidate for the office of president of the SDSM in 2014, but was defeated by the incumbent Gjorge Ivanov ( VMRO-DPMNE ) in the second ballot with 42.7% . In the 2019 presidential election he was able to prevail in the second ballot with 53.6% against the VMRO-DPMNE candidate Gordana Siljanovska-Davkova (46.4%). On May 12, 2019, he took up his post as President of North Macedonia.
