TVS Motor Company Limited (formerly TVS Suzuki , Indo Suzuki Motorcycles Pvt. Ltd. and Indian Motorcycle Pvt. Ltd. ) is an Indian two-wheeler and commercial vehicle manufacturer based in Chennai . It belongs to the TVS Group and is considered their most important company.

history

In 1979 the company Sundaram-Clayton (SCL) , which belongs to the TVS Group, started a moped production in Hosur (TVS 50). On July 15, 1982, SCL founded the subsidiary Indian Motorcycle Pvt. Ltd. whose name was changed to Indo Suzuki Motorcycles Pvt. January 12, 1984 . Ltd. was changed. The technical cooperation with the Japanese company Suzuki was not entered into until September 22, 1984 (according to another source, however, as early as 1982).

The subsidiary Lakshmi Auto Components Pvt. Was founded in 1985 to manufacture engines and transmissions . Ltd. founded. In 1986 Indo Suzuki took over the moped division of Sundaram-Clayton. In addition, Indo Suzuki Motorcycles Ltd. Renamed TVS Suzuki Ltd on August 18, 1986.

At the end of 1996, TVS Suzuki received the “Emerging Corporate Giant” award from the Indian Economic Times and the Harvard Business School Alumni Association .

As early as 1999, Suzuki wanted to acquire a majority stake in TVS Suzuki or, alternatively, to found its own, 100% subsidiary. In 2001, the TVS Group and Suzuki ended their joint venture on September 27, when Suzuki's 25.97% stake was acquired. At the same time, the company's name was changed to TVS Motor Company. Sundaram-Clayton currently holds 57.4% of the shares in TVS Motor Company. The separation of TVS Motor Company and Suzuki was seen as a win-win option for both sides , as was the case with Hero Honda .

In 2013 TVS Motor Company and BMW-Motorrad signed a cooperation agreement to manufacture motorcycles with less than 500 cc for the European market. The delivery of the first model was delayed.

TVS Suzuki's market shares between 1985 and 1995 gradually fell from an initial 19 percent to 13 percent (1988) and then remained at 8 to 9 percent. In 1995, TVS Suzuki again closed with 13 percent. In 1997, TVS Suzuki was the leading two-wheel manufacturer in India. A few years later (2003), TVS Motor Company achieved a market share of 35% with sales growth of 31%. In 2014, TVS was named the third largest two-wheeler manufacturer after Hero MotoCorp and Bajaj Auto .

3.466 million vehicles were sold in the 2017/18 financial year. Of these, 490,000 motorcycles and 80,000 tricycles were exported. A market share of 2.58% was achieved for tricycles in India in 2017/18.

The company has manufacturing facilities in Hosur in Tamil Nadu , Mysore in Karnataka and Solan in Himachal Pradesh . Another plant is located in Indonesia . In 2013, TVS Motor Company set up an assembly line in Uganda . TVS Motor Company has eight subsidiaries. In April 2020, TVS Motor Company took over the British motorcycle manufacturer Norton Motorcycles Company .

Models

Ind Suzuki AX100

The two-wheelers produced were sold under the brand names TVS (formerly also Ind Suzuki or TVS Suzuki ). One of the first models from 1980 onwards was the XL Super moped (initially TVS-50 ), of which more than ten million units had been produced by 2015. This makes it the only moped in the list of the ten best-selling motorcycles in India. In 1992 the new Samurai and Shogun models were introduced. In 1993, the new TVS Scooty came onto the market, which after a few years was geared towards female customers. The new XL Super moped model followed in 1997 . In the same year TVS was the first manufacturer in the Indian market to introduce a scooter ( Spectra ) with a four-stroke engine. The Scooty Streak was aimed at a young target group from 2009 onwards.

The TVS Motor Company was the first to offer a 100 cc motorcycle with a catalytic converter and the first 150 cc motorcycle with a four-stroke engine in India. TVS also played a pioneering role in India with the first motorcycle with automatic transmission and the anti-lock braking system .

In 2007, the TVS Motor Company presented their first auto rickshaw, the TVS King .

The most important models from TVS Motor in 2014 were Apache, Phoenix, Flame, Star City, Wego, Scooty Streak and Scooty Pep. By the beginning of 2019, 50,000 BMW G 310 R and BMW G 310 GS were produced as part of the cooperation with BMW . The TVS Apache RR 310 is based on these sister models.

Racing

The TVS Motor Company has had its own racing department with TVS Racing since 1983. In the beginning, mopeds were brought up to 105 km / h. From 1988 to 1999 TVS Racing scored 159 victories at 185 events. From 2000 to 2013 there were 201 victories in 222 races. In 2015, TVS Racing formed with the Sherco Sherco TVS Rally - factory team and took with it the first Indian team at the Dakar Rally in part.

In the 11th episode of season 2 of The Grand Tour , Richard Hammond uses a TVS Star for a 320 km drive through Mozambique .
