The Grand Tour is a British television magazine on the subject of automobile that of Jeremy Clarkson , Richard Hammond and James May will be presented. The show, produced by Andy Wilman , has been published exclusively on the Amazon Video streaming service since November 18, 2016 .
format
Almost every episode of the show was recorded in the first season in a different country with the studio recordings in front of different audiences. Since the second season, the tent has remained on the Great Tew Estate, which is located in the Cotswold Hills in West Oxfordshire .
background
After the consisting of the presenters Clarkson, Hammond and May and producer Wilman quartet of BBC telecast Top Gear in 2015 after a dispute between Clarkson and the BBC ended its cooperation with the station, shortly afterwards with Amazon is negotiating conditions on its streaming service To broadcast a sequel to Amazon Video .
The production company W. Chump & Sons , which is owned by Clarkson, Hammond, May and Wilman, finally agreed in July 2015 on a sum of 160 million pounds for the broadcasting rights over three years, according to media reports. It would be Amazon's largest investment to date in an original broadcast that is also one of the most expensive in the UK. The plan was initially to produce three seasons with twelve episodes each. As the streaming service Prime Video announced, there will also be a fourth season. At the end of November 2019 it was announced that the fourth season will start with a special on December 13, 2019.
Test track
One aspect of the show is getting the fastest lap possible with the cars discussed in the show. The test track for this is located near the English city of Swindon . Since the 2 km long track from the top to the shape of the Ebola virus reminded the track "Eboladrome" was called. Parts of the course have names such as “Isn't Straight”, “Old Lady's House”, “Field of Sheep” or “Your Name Here”.
In order to obtain comparable values as possible, the laps are always driven by the same driver. In the first season it was the American racing driver Mike Skinner . From the second season he was replaced by the British racing driver Abbie Eaton . In order to get some reference values, 10 cars were tested at the Eboladrome when the first show appeared. The list is currently headed by a McLaren Senna with 1: 12.9 min .
synchronization
The synchronization into German is carried out by Studio Hamburg . The dialogue book is by Bernd Lang, directed by Georg Prilop .
As with the Top Gear series, synchronization is carried out using the voice-over method . Jeremy Clarkson will be dubbed by Erik Schäffler as before and James May will also receive his German translation from Volker Hanisch as before . Richard Hammond, on the other hand, has a new speaker in the form of Christian Stark from Hamburg .
Recurring elements
Intro
The intro was always adapted to the host country in the first season and describes the arrival of the moderators. In the scene in which locals greet the moderators, the name of one of the moderators is misspelled or another celebrity is mentioned. At the beginning it is also mentioned what will happen in the respective episode - however, this usually has nothing to do with cars. The intro in the first season ends with the collision of the camera drone, which is flying towards the studio tent, with something specific to the region (e.g. a seagull) and the resulting crash of the drone.
Celebrity Brain Crash
At least one celebrity was announced in every standard episode of the first season. From the studio tent you could already see it. However, an accident always happened in front of the tent or on the way there. The celebrities apparently died in the process, commented on by Clarkson and Hammond. May asked each time whether the celebrity could still come on the show. Hammond then explained the cause of death of the celebrity and denied it.
The complete waiver of celebrity guests was owed to the statements of the three presenters of the BBC , which threatened with legal action, should the program show too strong a similarity to the previous format Top Gear .
Celebrity Face Off
Celebrity Brain Crash was replaced by Celebrity Face Off in the second season . Two celebrities were guests in the tent who have something in common that is as absurd as possible. In the first episode, the American actor David Hasselhoff competed against the English singer Ricky Wilson because both jurors were on TV casting shows. The celebrities had to complete a lap in a Jaguar F-Type on a specially created circuit near the English village of Enstone , half of which consists of asphalt and half gravel. This part of the program was omitted in the third season.
Conversation Street
Which is introduced Conversation Street from a theatrical experience of the three presenters, on bar chair sitting in front of a screen wall. This is loosened up by slapstick elements. So Hammond gets z. B. supernaturally long fingers while he explains something. After this intro, the three of them talk, for example, about peculiarities relating to road traffic in the country in which they are currently visiting or about news from the automotive industry.
reception
The Neue Zürcher Zeitung wrote that the Grand Tour was the opposite of the educational trip that gave the series its name. She mentions a schoolboy humor that doesn't get any funnier even in the fifth repetition and calls the obviously rehearsed dialogues infinitely embarrassing.
In the English-speaking world, the criticism was consistently positive, the show was described there as "Top Gear on steroids".
Trivia
The name of the production company W. Chump and Sons Ltd. , which translated means fool and sons , is made up of the surnames of the moderators and producers ( Andy W ilman , Jeremy C larkson , Richard H ammond , James M ay ).
