The Jeep Wrangler is an off-road vehicle from Jeep . Historically, the automobile follows the Willys MB , which was designed by Willys-Overland for the US government during the Second World War . The Wrangler's direct predecessor was the Jeep CJ .
The first generation YJ was produced from 1987, the second generation TJ from 1997, which was replaced by the third generation JK in 2006 (in Germany only in 2007). The fourth and current generation JL has been built since 2018 and was developed by the American subsidiary FCA US LLC of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles .

The Wrangler YJ was built from 1987 to 1995. It was the direct successor to the Jeep CJ . It is easy to distinguish from the latter due to its square lamps, and like the CJ it also has leaf-sprung axles.
The Wrangler YJ was available in four engines:
- A 2.5-liter four-cylinder in-line engine with 76 kW (103 hp)
- A 2.5-liter four-cylinder in-line engine with 88 kW (120 hp) and initially a 4.2-liter in-line six-cylinder with 84 kW (114 hp) carburettor.
- The 4.2-liter six-cylinder in-line engine was replaced in 1991 by a 4.0-liter variant with 135 kW (184 hp) with injection. At the same time, the 2.5-liter engine was replaced by a variant with an injection system.
- The 4.0-liter six-cylinder in-line engine with 131 kW (178 hp) was installed in the Wrangler YJ and Cherokee XJ.
The braking system, axles and frame of the 2.5, 4.0 and 4.2 liter models remained unchanged, except for the models from 1987 to 1989 which were produced in Canada and approved in Germany through individual reports. There are changes here, especially in the rear brake.
From 1987 to 1992, the YJ was manufactured in Brampton, Ontario , Canada, before production was relocated to Toledo, Ohio , USA. A total of 685,071 vehicles were produced by the YJ during the model period.
In China, the Wrangler YJ was manufactured by the Beijing Jeep Corporation under the name Beijing-Jeep BJ 2024 and remained in the program there until 2001. But the vehicle was also assembled by Pars Khodro in Iran . Here the model was marketed under the name Jeep Sahara from 1989 to 1997 .
Wrangler TJ

Production period: | 1997-2006 |
Body versions : | Station wagon , convertible |
Engines: |
Petrol engines : 2.4-4.0 liters (105-130 kW) |
Length: | 3841-4343 mm |
Width: | 1732 mm |
Height: | 1782-1784 mm |
Wheelbase : | 2372-2626 mm |
Empty weight : | 1615-1795 kg |
In Germany, the Wrangler TJ was last offered with a 2.4-liter four-cylinder in-line engine or a 4.0-liter six-cylinder in-line engine. The 2.4 liter has an output of 105 kW (143 hp) and the 4.0 liter of 130 kW (177 hp). The equipment lines were called Sport (2.4 or 4.0 liters, both with six-speed manual transmission) or Sahara (4.0 liters with manual or automatic transmission). The maximum speed of the 4.0-liter models with manual gearbox is 174 km / h, the automatic version has 170 km / h. The 2.4 liter creates 140 km / h.
The Sahara model differed primarily in its higher quality equipment (e.g. standard air conditioning and a better radio and sound system, higher quality seat fabrics).
There was also the Rubicon model . This was only imported in small numbers in Europe by Daimler Chrysler . It also had the 4.0 liter engine, but with only 128 kW (174 hp) and for the European market only an automatic transmission. The top speed of the Rubicon has been reduced to 148 km / h. However, this model differed from the Sport and Sahara versions , which are based on DANA30-, in that the technology was even more robust (reinforced axles DANA44 front and rear with a 4.11 axle ratio, off-road tires, etc.) and locks (called Tru-Lok) for the axle differentials . Axles at the front and DANA35 axles at the rear and have a 3.53 axle ratio. However, it had no ABS, central locking or electric windows. The placement of the air compressor for the compressed air locks on the protective plate of the transfer case was viewed by experts as a notorious weakness of this model . This placement made it possible that in the event of defective or leaky suction hoses when driving through water with the locks activated or when they were first activated, etc. U. water is sucked in, which resulted in the destruction of the compressor and consequently the uselessness of the locks. In addition, the protective plate of the transfer case had to be lowered in order to create space for the compressors, which led to people getting stuck when driving over short high obstacles. This shortcoming was eliminated with the successor model JK. The Rubicon also has a differently stepped transfer case with an off-road reduction of 4: 1, the Sport and Sahara models have an off-road reduction of 3.07: 1.
Unlike previous models, the Wrangler TJ no longer has leaf springs and was delivered as a model with rear-wheel drive and a manually switchable front axle.
Based on the Wrangler TJ , the Dodge Wrangler TJL was manufactured in Manila between 2009 and 2011 . This is an open off-road vehicle specially designed for desert terrain. Another version, known as the Jeep TJL , was assembled by Arab American Vehicles in Cairo between 2003 and 2008 and was specially designed for this local market. This version is mainly used by the Egyptian and Turkish military . In civilian use, the TJL is particularly popular as a desert vehicle.
In Iran, on the other hand, the model was marketed under the model name Jeep Sahara like its predecessor , but only introduced there in 2002 and assembled by Pars Khodro until 2006.
Wrangler JK
JK | |
---|---|
Production period: | 2007-2018 |
Body versions : | Station wagon , convertible |
Engines: |
Otto engines : 3.6–3.8 liters (146–209 kW) Diesel engines : 2.8 liters (130–147 kW) |
Length: | 4223-4751 mm |
Width: | 1873-1877 mm |
Height: | 1800-1865 mm |
Wheelbase : | 2423-2945 mm |
Empty weight : | 1835-2120 kg |
The JK was first presented in 2006 at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit by Chrysler President Tom LaSorda , who drove a spectacular JK through a pane of glass for the presentation.
On April 21, 2007 the new Jeep Wrangler 2007 JK went on sale. It is offered in two model variants - as a two-door and now as a four-door with the name extension Unlimited . The basic platform of the predecessor TJ has been replaced by an improved JK platform and now offers improved road holding on asphalt. This Wrangler is significantly longer and wider than the previous models.
Versions
- Variant with short wheelbase and two doors as Sport , Sahara and Rubicon
- Long wheelbase variant with four doors as Sport , Sahara and Rubicon
A six-speed manual gearbox is standard for the 2.8-liter turbodiesel variants. (Five-speed automatic for the four-door variants Sahara and Rubicon in Germany). A four-speed automatic transmission was available for the 3.8-liter V6 petrol engine, which was replaced in 2012 by the 5G-TRONIC transmission from Mercedes-Benz.
The Rubicon equipment range is intended for tougher off-road use. With reinforced axles and a better terrain reduction, it should be up to any task. Furthermore, the Rubicon has a stabilizer that can be divided from the driver's seat by an electrically locked sleeve, which increases the possible articulation of the axles in the field, as well as electrically operated locks in the front and rear axles. These can also be operated from the cockpit. ESP is new to all equipment lines.
In Egypt , the current generation of Arab American Vehicles is also assembled to suit the local market. There is a choice of the model offered there as a Jeep J8 as a two- or four-seater, each with a short or long wheelbase. Four-cylinder diesel engines of the type VM 2.8L from VM Motori (Italy) are used. With a displacement of 2777 cm³ , it achieves an output of 118 kW (160 hp). As the Jeep TJL-J8 , the model is also available as a hardtop version with a removable roof.

10th Anniversary Edition
From August 2013 the Wrangler Rubicon was offered as a "10th Anniversary Edition". The special model was available as a two-door model as well as in the long version "Wrangler Unlimited". The engines are the 209 kW V6 gasoline engine and the 4-cylinder diesel with 147 kW (200 hp).
Wrangler JK Unlimited
The Wrangler Unlimited is the first four-door Wrangler. According to the manufacturer's marketing department, it should be in no way inferior to the two-door model in terms of off-road capability despite its 523 mm longer length and a wheelbase of 2945 mm. The approach angles are identical, but the ramp angle is lower due to the longer wheelbase (20.8 ° instead of 25.1 °).
The engines of the JK Unlimited are identical to those of the two-door variants, the tank capacity has been increased. The maximum trailer load for the four-door model has also been increased, at least in the higher equipment lines.

Stars in the Euro NCAP - Crash Test (2018) |
The fourth generation Wrangler carries the product code JL and was introduced at the LA Auto Show in November 2017. Like its predecessor, the JL is available as a three-door or as an extended five-door (again called Unlimited ), as well as with different roof variations: A hard top called a fixed but also removable roof, a fabric top as a soft top or as a dual top , with the hard top mounted and that Soft top is in the vehicle when purchased.
In 2018, the Wrangler was tested for vehicle safety by Euro NCAP . The vehicle received only one of five possible stars.
The new generation should be significantly lighter than its predecessor, thanks in part to the use of aluminum for some body parts. Chrysler indicates a weight saving of up to 100 kg. Four-cylinder in-line engines and six-cylinder V-gasoline engines as well as a six-cylinder V- diesel are used as drives . The six-cylinder engines and the eight-speed automatic transmission, a license from ZF, are taken over from the Jeep Grand Cherokee WK2 .
In Europe, only a two-liter gasoline engine with four cylinders and 199 kW (271 hp) and a 2.2-liter four-cylinder turbo diesel with 147 kW (200 hp) will be used.
In mid-July 2020, Jeep presented the Wrangler Rubicon 392 Concept, a study with the 6.4-liter Chrysler HEMI V8 gasoline engine.
