The Jeep Commander is an all-terrain SUV with seven seats from the Jeep brand belonging to the American Chrysler Group .

history

Based on the floor pan of the Jeep Grand Cherokee , it came onto the German market in May 2006 and was the top model in the Jeep model range. The Commander model delivered in Germany was manufactured by Magna Steyr in Graz / Austria from 2006 to around mid-2009 . The version with a 3.0 liter V6 diesel engine from Mercedes-Benz was produced exclusively in Graz for the European market.

The angular body shape of the Jeep Commander is reminiscent of the old Jeep Cherokee XJ ; Vertical window surfaces and headlights as well as exhibited wheelhouses should create a particularly masculine appearance. In contrast to the Grand Cherokee, the Commander is only equipped with seven seats.

Rear view

The Commander was initially available in the Sport and Limited trim levels . The sport included the basic version with fabric seats and without chrome trim, while the better equipped Limited is equipped with leather seats including heated seats and parking aid.

Since the 2008 model year, only the Limited and Overland variants (the latter available since 2007) have been available in Germany, as well as a few copies of the Sport variant . The Limited is the upscale version. The equipment includes an exclusive interior package with leather trim on the dashboard and a hard drive navigation system with Bluetooth hands-free system and reversing camera, as well as an electric sliding glass roof and two additional skylights (second row of seats). The Overland offers over the Limited substantially a nobler leather (two colors), a further improved all-wheel drive system (Quadra Drive II) and xenon headlights .

All equipment variants include a 5- speed automatic transmission and a foldable third row of seats (seven seats) as standard .

The 5.7 Hemi V8 engine has only been available in conjunction with the Overland equipment since 2008.

The engines available in Europe are a 160 kW (218 hp) 3.0-liter V6 diesel engine from Mercedes-Benz and the 5.7-liter Hemi V8 engine. The 4.7-liter V8 with 170 kW (231 hp) has not been offered in Europe since 2008. A smaller 3.7-liter V6 petrol engine with 157 kW (214 hp) and, since 2008, a 4.7-l V8 with 223 kW (303 hp) are also available in the USA.

All vehicles manufactured for Europe are exclusively equipped with all-wheel drive and off-road reduction. The power is transmitted via an automatic transmission from Mercedes-Benz. The prices are about the same as the Grand Cherokee.

Safety equipment

The Jeep Commander offers the following safety technologies as standard:

  • Anti-lock braking system (ABS) : Electronic sensors prevent the wheels from locking. The ABS improves steering control during emergency braking or braking maneuvers on slippery surfaces.
  • Electronic Stability Program (ESP) : This system helps the driver to maintain directional stability under all conditions within the framework of the laws of physics. Particularly helpful under critical driving conditions such as in curves and on different road surfaces such as snow, ice or gravel. As soon as there is a clear difference between the steering direction specified by the driver and the direction the vehicle is taking, the ESP intervenes specifically with the brake or throttle position and brings the vehicle back on the right track.
  • Tire pressure control system (TPM / RDC) : The system uses pressure sensors in the valves to monitor the tire pressure on all four wheels and constantly sends radio signals to a receiver in the vehicle. If there is a loss of pressure, a warning lamp lights up.
  • Electronic Roll Mitigation (ERM): An additional function of the ESP that uses the data from this system and predicts the risk of a rollover. The system then reduces the engine torque and triggers short emergency braking on the corresponding wheel in order to stabilize the vehicle.
  • Brake Assist (BAS) : The system recognizes the initiation of emergency braking and immediately delivers maximum braking force for the shortest possible braking distance.
  • Enhanced Accident Response System (EARS): In the event of an accident, this improved accident response system makes it easier for rescue personnel to find and reach passengers. After the airbags are deployed, EARS switches on the interior lighting and unlocks the doors. The system also cuts off the fuel supply to the engine.
  • Advanced multi-stage front airbags : the system detects and classifies the severity of the impact and releases it in three stages depending on the impact strength.
  • Side airbags in the front seats: The airbags are located on the outside of the front seats and improve the protection of the driver and front passenger in certain collision situations. Each side airbag has its own sensor, so only the airbag on the side of the impact is triggered.
  • Side curtain airbags : More protection for all passengers on the outside seats. Each side curtain airbag has its own triggering sensor: only the airbag on the side of the impact is triggered.
  • Traction control with brake intervention: the system detects slip on individual wheels and brakes spinning wheels in a targeted manner and / or reduces the engine torque until traction is restored.
  • Structural safety cage: Protects passengers with targeted diversion and diversion of the impact energy in the event of an accident.
  • Crash boxes: Areas of the body that compress on predefined paths in the event of an impact and absorb the impact energy.
  • Energy-absorbing steering column: Two coaxial tubes produced using the hydroforming process can slide against each other in the event of a collision so that the steering column does not slide into the interior. The electrically adjustable steering column has a calibrated bending element that deforms in the event of an accident and optimally dissipates the impact energy.
  • Side impact protection: Struts in the front and rear doors offer passengers protection in the event of a side impact.
  • Head impact protection in the interior: components that were specifically developed to minimize the forces acting on the head. This includes the pillars above the belt line, the instrument panel, the structure of the roof and side struts and the pulleys for the seat belts.
  • Seat belt tensioners: in the event of a collision, the impact sensors activate the seat belt tensioners and pull the front seat belts taut. This minimizes the forward movement of the head and trunk in the event of a collision.
  • Belt force limiter: Dosers the restraint force of the front seat belts depending on the load and thus limits the belt forces acting on the body in the event of an impact.
  • Height-adjustable straps: passengers can adjust the shoulder strap to a suitable height; With its comfortable seat it promotes the use of seat belts.
  • BeltAlert: A gong that sounds regularly reminds the driver to put on the seat belt until he does it.
  • Child seat anchorage (ISOFIX): Facilitates the installation of compatible child seats.

Terrain characteristics

In contrast to many other SUVs, the Jeep Commander is also a full-fledged off-road vehicle.

The data:

  • Approach angle at the front: 34 °
