The Jeep Grand Cherokee is a SUV of the upper middle class , that of the Jeep -Division of Chrysler is produced. The Grand Cherokee for Europe was created by Magna Steyr in Austria until 2010 .

development

The Grand Cherokee was actually developed from the smaller Jeep Cherokee . Its origins go back to 1983 when AMC engineers designed a successor to the Cherokee. The prototype "Jeep Concept 1" from 1989 already anticipated the basic design. The Grand Cherokee was the first Jeep with Chrysler emblem, as the concept came from AMC; the AMC engineers involved in the project - later Chrysler employees (after Chrysler bought AMC in 1987) - wanted to show the car in the late 1980s, but then-CEO Lee Iacocca gave priority to overhauled Chrysler minivans a; this delayed the presentation of the Grand Cherokee until 1992. Chrysler put the Grand Cherokee against the Ford Explorer .

The Grand Cherokee was presented on a grand scale at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in 1992 . Then Chrysler President Robert A. Lutz drove Detroit Mayor Coleman Young up the steps of Cobo Hall and through a glass window to appropriately display the new product. Production of the Grand Cherokee began a little later in the specially built "Jefferson North Assembly" plant in Detroit and stayed there.

The ZJ models were built from 1993 to 1998. With a V8 engine, it was on the list of "10 Best Cars" by "Car and Driver" magazine in 1993 and was named Truck of the Year by Motor Trend magazine . The model was Petersen’s 4 × 4 from 1993, 1996 (after the introduction of the new transmission) and - as Limited 5.9 - 1998.

On request, there was an up-country package with stronger gas pressure shock absorbers and other reinforced chassis components.

In 1995 Chrysler increased the torque of the 5.2 liter V8 engine from 386 to 407 Nm. The 1996 model year brought cosmetic changes to the grille and bumper with integrated fog lights; Inside there were two airbags and better upholstery fabrics. At the same time, the "Grand Cherokee" emblems on the front fenders, which were still from AMC, were replaced by those used by Chrysler. The AMC inline six-cylinder engine with a displacement of 4.0 liters has also been revised; it lost some power, but gained some maximum torque and smoothness.

Equipment variants

series

  • Base (1993–1995) was the simplest model with fabric seat covers and manual 5-speed gearboxes. Renamed to SE in 1994 , electric windows and central locking were not yet part of this basic equipment of the ZJ. They did not become standard until 1995. The high price led to weak customer interest and thus to low quantities, which in turn led to the discontinuation of the basic model, which is rare today.
  • Laredo (1993–1998) was the initially medium-sized model, which became the basic model in 1996 with additional plastic planks and aprons on the body, power windows, central locking, cruise control and five-spoke aluminum wheels.
  • The Limited (1993-1998) was the top model. His plastic aprons were the color of the car. It had leather upholstery and, on request, a sunroof, heated mirrors, electrically adjustable and heated seats, a key card ( keyless entry ), on-board computer and aluminum wheels in a special design. From 1996 it offered even more luxury such as a memory driver's seat, remote control of the radio from the steering wheel and progressive power steering.

Special models

Limited 5.9 (1998)
Grand Cherokee 5.9 l (1998) (with air outlets on the bonnet and expanded metal insert in the radiator grille)

The Limited with a 5.9 liter engine was produced in limited numbers and only in the 1998 model year, had better equipment and more power than the unlimited Limited and carried the "5.9 Limited" emblem. In Europe there was a similar equipment under the name Limited LX . It has been delivered 15,000 times worldwide. He had a Magnum 5.9 liter V8 engine that developed 177 kW (241 hp) and accelerated the car from 0 to 100 km / h in 7.3 s ( Motor Trend even measured 6.8 s), which made it the fastest SUV of the year. Jeep only exceeded its acceleration values in 2006 with the Grand Cherokee SRT8 with a 6.1-liter Hemi-V8. This 1998 Grand Cherokee was voted "4x4 of the Year" by Petersen's 4-Wheel & Off-Road . Its rarity and performance make it very sought after. In addition to the Limited , he also has

  • working air outlets on the bonnet
  • Radiator grille with fine-meshed grille inserts
  • special aluminum wheels with five spokes
  • Tires without white lettering
  • a higher quality premium audio stereo system with 180 W and ten loudspeakers, four of which on a loudspeaker console at the rear
  • Seat covers made of softer calfskin
  • Door panels of leather
  • Automatic lever, handbrake lever and gear lever with leather knob
  • Imitation wood paneling around the automatic selector lever base
  • a leather spare wheel cover with various pockets
  • a center armrest at the back
  • a lower roof rack that eliminated the rack's squeaking noises on the Limited 5.2
  • Plastic planking outside in body color
  • Sleeper aprons

and for an additional increase in performance

  • a stronger gearbox with a reinforced output shaft
  • a Dana 44A differential (aluminum housing) with lock
  • an electric fan
  • Alternator with increased power
  • High-performance exhaust system with three-inch pipes (7.6 cm diameter) and a large polished stainless steel end piece.

It was only available in the exterior colors Deep Slate (black metallic), Forest Green PG 8 and Bright Platinum Metallic (platinum silver) and in Canada also deep amethyst (violet-blue metallic) and white.

Grand Wagoneer (1993)
Jeep Grand Wagoneer (1993)

Only in the 1993 model year was there a particularly well-equipped version with a 5.2-liter V8 engine, which was the last Jeep to bear the name Grand Wagoneer . He had the equipment of the Limited and side decoration made of wood imitation foil and special "Grand Wagoneer" emblems. It was the most expensive car in the range and was only built in limited numbers.

Orvis Edition (1995–1997)

The Orvis - available 1995–1997 - was an equipment package for the Limited , which was available in the exterior colors Moss Green Pearlcoat (= moss green metallic , Chrysler color code PJN) or - more rarely - Light Driftwood with red and gold side stripes (1995). Green paint accents on the wheels (to match the green body color) and special "Orvis" emblems were the only external recognition features, in addition to the Up-Country suspension package that a suspension lift the vehicle by one inch, two special tow hooks front and rear, Included protective plates for the gearbox, gas tank and the underside as well as stronger gas pressure shock absorbers and off-road tires. Except for the windshield and the front side windows, the window panes were tinted dark. The interior design was very different from the original model and comprised two-tone green-brown leather seats with red piping and "Orvis" emblems. This equipment package made the car - if fully ordered - the most expensive Grand Cherokee version by 1997.

TSi (1997-1998)

The sporty TSi model (1997–1998) had plastic planks in body color with indigo blue stripes in the lower body area, similar to the Eagle Talon . The TSi package contained 16 ″ aluminum wheels with five spokes, 225/70 R 16 tires, sports suspension and more direct steering, seat covers made of perforated leather and a first-class sound system. The 5.2-liter V8 engine was available at an additional cost. The TSi was priced between Laredo and Limited.

All-wheel drive

4x4 drive was initially available automatically as a command trac . With the SE equipment line , it dropped out of the range after the 1996 model year. The “Selec-Trac” system, on the other hand, offered the option of either temporarily or permanently driving with all-wheel drive. Both systems already existed in the Cherokee . Only with the Grand Cherokee was there a permanent all-wheel drive with “Quadra-Trac”. It was standard in the Limited equipment and most of the special models, and on request in the Laredo . Only rear-wheel drive was available for the six-cylinder versions until the end of 1993 only for the Laredo and from 1994 also in the Limited and from 1997 also for the 5.2-liter V8 versions.

The revised Grand Cherokee WJ or (from the production in Graz for the European market) WG from model year 1999 had only 127 parts in common with its predecessor. The superstructure was stiffened by Porsche Engineering to achieve lower weight and better steering properties. The spare wheel went from the side of the cargo area under the cargo area floor, which the buyers really appreciated.

Grand Cherokee WJ rear view

After the takeover by Chrysler in 1987, the WJ was the first Jeep to feature a wider 5 "five-hole circle instead of the 4.5 ″ five-hole circle that is usually used by Jeep. 5 ″ bolt circle with five wheel bolts (diameter 127 mm), which was initially found on rear-wheel drive cars and light trucks and vans from GM, also spread to Ford vehicles, namely the Ford LTD (1973–1978) and the Lincoln - Models. Chrysler first used this bolt circle in the 1986 model year for the Dodge Ram as a large half-ton pickup and for the Dodge Ramcharger SUV .

In 2004 the Grand Cherokee received another light facelift one year before it was replaced .

Equipment variants

series

In addition to the less well-equipped Laredo with sports seats, there was initially only the more luxurious Limited .

As of 2002, the former after the Jeep owner was Willys-Overland named Overland top model. From mid-2003, a two-tone black interior and a navigation system were added to the lavish interior with “Overland” emblems. The equipment included front and side airbags , an infinity sound system with changer for ten CDs, heated and electrically adjustable front seats, an electrically operated sunroof, a steering wheel in a leather and wood finish and 17 ″ aluminum wheels. Equipped as standard with the 4.7-liter high-performance machine, it could also be supplied with the common-rail diesel engine.

Special models

  • 2002–2003: Sport , positioned above the Laredo with a special two-tone black interior,
  • 2002–2004: Special Edition initially like a Limited with smooth plastic planks throughout and with a 4.7 l V8 engine, later also with a richer interior such as a CD changer installed in the cargo area,
  • 2003–2004: Columbia Edition with the usual features of the other special models and also a two-tone interior with Columbia sportswear emblems and a navigation system for an extra charge,
  • 2004–2005: Vision limited to 333 pieces , like Overland , with additional aluminum trim strips outside and inside, navigation system, parking assistant and a sticker in the interior with an engraved production number,
  • 2004–2005: Final Edition , such as Overland with trim strips in the same color as the car on the outside and wood on the inside and also a Webasto auxiliary heater .

Engines

The two heavy V8 engines of the previous model with hanging valves (OHV) replaced a modern V8 engine with aluminum cylinder block and overhead camshafts (OHC), called ' Power-Tech '. It was lighter, consumed significantly less gasoline with the same output and higher torque. The 45RFE automatic transmission used here by Chrysler was remarkable: It has three planetary sets instead of the two otherwise usual for 4-speed automatic transmissions. In theory, this enabled six stages, making the transmission the first series-produced six-stage automatic; but it was programmed so that only five levels could be used. Four levels were used for normal driving, an additional second level came into action when downshifting. Although five of the six possible gear ratios were used, Chrysler decided to call the transmission a "4-speed automatic". Only later was the longest translation activated via a software update. From now on the designation was 545RFE.

The 3.1-liter turbodiesel, which was available in Europe from 1999 onwards, was developed together with Detroit Diesel and VM Motori. It has an electronic injection pump, an electronically controlled, vacuum-operated exhaust gas recirculation system and a special catalytic converter for reducing nitrogen oxide. 13,000 pieces were produced annually in Cento in Italy . Its emissions behavior corresponded to the EURO I standard. It was equipped with an electronically controlled four-speed automatic transmission. From 2002 it was replaced by a variant of the 2.7-liter five-cylinder engine known from the Mercedes 270 CDI. The common rail diesel engine with 120 kW (163 hp) delivers a maximum of 400 Nm and, at 10 l / 100 km, enables far lower consumption than its predecessor. The power is transmitted here by a five-speed automatic transmission from Mercedes-Benz .

all wheel drive

A remarkable detail was the optionally available, automatically engaged four-wheel drive " Quadra-Drive ". It had three fluid couplings. At the time, it was one of the few all-wheel drive systems that had three limited slip differentials and the only fully automatic one. Otherwise, in addition to the Unimog from Mercedes-Benz, only the Mercedes-Benz G-model and Steyr Pinzgauer off-road vehicles manufactured by Magna Steyr like the WG in Graz offered 100% lockable differentials on axles and cardan shaft.

Further production in China since 2006

The Beijing Jeep Corporation , which had been manufacturing the old Cherokee XJ since 1984 , acquired the WJ's production facilities in 2004 after the WK was introduced. After the facilities had been rebuilt, the WJ was presented for the Chinese market in 2006 as the Jeep 4000 and Jeep 4700 (with 4.0-l R6 engine and 4.7-l V8 engine including high-performance special models). It became Beijing's flagship model, resembling the 2004 Limited in appearance and features including chassis, four-wheel drive systems, body-colored plastic planks, aluminum wheels, sound systems, and climate control. This was done differently than with the Cherokee XJ, which Beijing Jeep had significantly changed for the Chinese market.

The Grand Cherokee WH was introduced in 2004 as a 2005 model. Jeep innovations that were part of the program for the first time were the Quadra-Drive II all-wheel drive system , a DVD player for the rear and, on request, a 5.7-liter Hemi V8 engine.

The construction continues to emphasize performance and luxury, but a lot of work has been done to reduce noise and vibrations. For the first time, however, Jeep placed just as much emphasis on good road properties as on the excellent off-road capabilities typical of the brand.

This new focus on driving characteristics on paved roads prompted Jeep to replace the rigid front axle with trailing arms (as in the ZJ and WJ) with a construction with double wishbones as in the Jeep Liberty presented in 2002 . Chrysler was responding to the increased demand for better SUVs that could be driven on asphalt roads and that were less suitable for off-road use. Although the new design is perceived as being softer on washboard slopes, the front wheel suspension was criticized by the clientele who use the Jeep off-road because of the lower possible axle articulation, especially during slow maneuvers on uneven terrain.

Jeep Grand Cherokee (2008)

Three engines and two equipment variants were available in Germany for the market launch. The Mercedes-Benz diesel, like the small V8 engine, was available in both the Laredo and the Limited , the 5.7-liter Hemi was only available in the upscale Limited variant. As an optional extra of his visit included a DVD - navigation system with integrated CD changer for election, also in was Limited a so-called Exclusive package , the available, leather - and chrome trim includes the interior.

The top model SRT8 with the large 6.1-liter V8 was in the price lists from 2006. Full equipment including a navigation system and leather sports seats are standard equipment.

Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 (2008)

The 2007 model year Jeep Grand Cherokee was presented in Europe at the Euro Camp Jeep in the Ardeche department , France . This year the luxury equipment Overland was added for the Diesel and the Hemi. The limited-exclusive package and a navigation system were standard equipment, as was the metallic paintwork and a sliding roof .

In 2008 the Jeep Grand Cherokee received a small facelift . Among other things, the standard Xenon headlights in the Overland and a revised interior with a new touchscreen navigation system were new . In Europe, only the SRT8 and the Mercedes-Benz diesel were offered in the 2008 model year.

With the 2009 model year, the revised 5.7-liter Hemi also returned to the European range. It now had an output of 259 kW (352 hp) and was only available in the high-quality Overland version. Otherwise, the model range with the SRT8 and the diesel remained unchanged except for the larger exterior mirrors and the revised navigation system.

Equipment lines and special models

Similar to its predecessor, the Laredo , which has been available since 2005, is the basic version with fabric seats. This is followed by the Limited with leather and heated seats and the fully equipped Overland, which has been available since 2007 . The SRT8 , also offered since 2006, has a different, better leather interior and a standard navigation system.

For the 2007 model year, Jeep offered the S-Limited special model with a modified front apron, 18-inch alloy wheels, leather-covered steering wheel and aluminum panels in the interior. A navigation system is also standard and the front grille is painted completely black.

Engines

Not all of the engines listed here are available in all countries; the 3.7-liter with 157 kW and the 4.7-liter with 175/227 kW were only sold in the USA. In Germany only the diesel, the 4.7-liter and the Hemi-V8 were available for introduction. Later the SRT8 was added, which was meanwhile the only petrol engine in the Grand Cherokee in Germany. The two smaller eight-cylinders were deleted from the range for the 2008 model year due to lack of demand. With the 2009 model year, however, the more powerful 5.7 Hemi was reintroduced in Germany.

The standard 4.7 liter is available in America as a FlexFuel engine and can be filled with ethanol . In addition, the official performance data may differ slightly in the various markets.

SRT-8

Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8

An SRT -8 version of the Grand Cherokee was unveiled at the 2005 New York International Auto Show. The SRT-8 is powered by a 313 kW (420 bhp / 426 hp) version of the 6.1-liter Chrysler V8 Hemi and has more powerful Brembo brakes, large exhaust pipes with chrome-plated ends (those in the middle of the Hecks münden), reinforced gas pressure shock absorbers, modified wheel suspensions , a special countershaft transmission, an electronic all-wheel drive system and interior and exterior equipment improvements.

diesel

Since its introduction, Jeep has offered a V6 common rail diesel from Mercedes-Benz . It is based on the OM 642 used in many Mercedes models and, as a 3.0 CRD, has an output of 160 kW (218 PS) and 510 Nm. The diesel particulate filter is standard. The power is transmitted by a Mercedes five-speed automatic .

all wheel drive

Three different all-wheel drive systems are offered in the current Grand Cherokee. Standard in the Laredo models (and since 2008 also in the Limited ) is the Quadra-Trac II all-wheel drive system, a fully automatically controlled four-wheel drive with off-road reduction. Initially available in all models (except the petrol engine in the Laredo ), the Quadra Drive II drive has been reserved for the Overland since 2008 . In addition to the Quadra-Trac , it has three hydraulic differential locks with electronic control. Quadra-Trac Active on Demand all-wheel drive is only available in the SRT-8 . It is a demand-controlled all-wheel drive without off-road reduction.

Since the early summer of 2010, the new model of the Grand Cherokee has been sold in the USA. Highlights of the Jeep Grand Cherokee 2011 are a new 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 engine with around 11% less fuel consumption compared to the previous model with more power and higher torque, a revised interior with high-quality materials, the Selec Terrain System, which enables the driver to adapt the performance of the Jeep to the respective environment, a new Quadra-Lift air suspension with which the vehicle can be raised to a ground clearance of up to 292 mm. In addition, the WK2 is more aerodynamic than any of its predecessors in order to optimize consumption.

The equipment versions “Overland Summit” or from the 2013 facelift only “Summit” were also new, which are particularly luxurious, but from 2013 different and lower bumpers are less suitable for off-road use.

The Grand Cherokee with the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 engine with 210 kW (286 hp) and the 5.7-l V8 Hemi engine with 259 kW (352 hp) has been sold in Germany since December 2010 . This was followed in spring 2011 by a 3.0-l V6 diesel (CRD) from VM Motori with 140 kW (190 PS) or 177 kW (241 PS), which was not offered in the USA. In autumn 2011, the Grand Cherokee SRT8 followed as the most powerful version with a 6.4-liter Hemi V8 engine with an output of 344 kW (468 hp).

Furnishing

The Jeep Grand Cherokee has a comfortable interior, for example with heated, front-ventilated seats, a headliner in a suede look and black or brown open-pored wood paneling in the "Summit" version. Standard features include, for example, the Natura Plus leather seats with their elaborate stitching and a multifunction steering wheel with a leather and wood finish (on certain versions) and a leather-covered instrument panel. A CommandView® panoramic glass roof is available as an option, and in higher versions as standard.

The individually configurable 7 ”info display in the instrument cluster with TFT technology can be set according to the driver's wishes and information needs. The vehicle information system can, for example, display the vehicle speed, navigation instructions and detailed information about vehicle systems such as Selec-Terrain® or Quadra-Lift®.

Also on board is an 8.4 ”infotainment system with 3D navigation. The latest generation of the uconnect system offers a large 8.4 ”touchscreen and rotary controls for quick access to all functions, including automatic air conditioning and radio. The voice-controlled hands-free telephone system with text message reading function also enables the wireless integration of external devices via Bluetooth®, e.g. for audio streaming. Further functions of the system are a USB connection, an SD card reader, DAB-Plus radio with double tuner and premium navigation with three-dimensional representation of sights, buildings and terrain surfaces. The vehicle and air conditioning settings as well as comfort electronics such as seat heating and ventilation or the steering wheel heating can also be controlled via the touchscreen.

A Harman Kardon audio system is available as standard in the “Summit” and “SRT” versions. The powerful 7.3 surround sound system has 19 GreenEdge speakers with subwoofer and an 825 watt amplifier. The Alpine surround system is part of the standard equipment of the “Limited” and “Overland” versions. This sound system with its 12-channel high-performance amplifier with 506 watts has a subwoofer and nine loudspeakers.

An optional feature is the Blu-Ray / DVD entertainment system with two high-resolution 9 ”VGA displays, which are integrated into the backrests to entertain the passengers in the rear. The system plays DVDs and Blu-rays. Both screens have independent HDMI and audio / video inputs for connecting external devices (e.g. Blu-ray player, game console). There are also two wireless headphones.

Off-road capability / chassis

The Quadra-Trac® II and Quadra-Drive® II all-wheel drive systems are designed to ensure optimum traction in different weather and road conditions. With the Selec-Terrain® system and Quadra-Lift® air suspension, the chassis properties should also be better adapted to a wide variety of driving requirements. With the Selec-Terrain® system, the Grand Cherokee can be optimally adjusted to a wide variety of driving conditions. The terrain can be selected using the control switch in the center console, for example mud, sand or stony terrain, and Selec-Terrain automatically coordinates up to twelve different systems - from stability and traction control to torque distribution, shift points and throttle response.

The Grand Cherokee has an off-road reduction, a locking center differential and a locking rear axle differential. The fording depth is 500 mm.

The Quadra-Lift® air suspension makes it possible to raise the jeep to a ground clearance of 270 mm at the push of a button - for example for driving over rocks or through snowdrifts. The Grand Cherokee can also be lowered by up to 40 mm to make it easier to get in and out of the vehicle and to make loading easier. At higher speeds, the aero mode lowers the body, thus ensuring lower air resistance and low fuel consumption.

Facelift 2013

For the 2014 model year, the Grand Cherokee was slightly revised and received, among other things, redesigned headlights and taillights and modified bumpers. In addition, the Grand Cherokee will also be available in the USA from model year 2014 with the 3.0-liter V6 diesel engine and an output of 184 kW. Like the gasoline engines, the engine is combined with an eight-speed automatic transmission from ZF. The 3.6 V6 Pentastar gasoline engine received a weaker gearbox and thus less trailer load, similar to the Summit equipment line, where the trailer load was reduced for approval reasons. The Summit and the SRT are approved as passenger cars, while the other versions are approved as off-road vehicles. In Germany, sales of the modified model began on July 6, 2013.

Facelift 2017

For the 75th anniversary (2016) of the brand, with the special model "75th Anniversary" and finally with the model year 2017, the Grand Cherokee was externally and technically revised and received, among other things, new, modified bumpers, wheels and equipment. The steeper bumper and the radiator grille make it look a bit more "brawny" and the newly designed design gives it a higher quality. The standard equipment at “Overland” and “Summit” has been further upgraded, for example by adding new assistance systems, including a parking and lane departure warning system. The “Summit” equipment line and the optional “Laguna” interior are also new. Seats and door panels are partially covered with leather with a diamond pattern. The lower panels of the door and the center console also look like leather. Alternatively, SRT sports seats can now also be ordered.

The sports model got a slight increase in output to 354 kW for the home market and is now simply referred to as the Grand Cheeroke SRT .

In addition, the new “Trailhawk” equipment line, the most off-road variant in the model range to date, was presented. In terms of price and equipment, the Trailhawk is positioned between the well-known equipment lines "Limited" and "Overland". It is also equipped as standard with reinforced underbody protection, air suspension, electronic limited-slip differential, terrain reduction (Quadra Drive ® II all-wheel drive system), special off-road tires (All-Terrain) from Goodyear , air-conditioned sports seats from the SRT and anti-glare protection on the bonnet. It is the most powerful variant of the Jeep Grand Cherokee ex works for off-road driving.

The Trailhawk is only available in conjunction with the 3.0-liter V6 diesel engine or the 3.6-liter V6 gasoline engine. The 5.7L Hemi V8 is not available for the Trailhawk in Europe.

Grand Cherokee Trackhawk

Jeep presented the Grand Cherokee Trackhawk at NYIAS in April 2017 . This receives the 527 kW (717 PS) strong 6.2-liter V8 gasoline engine from the Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat and is currently (as of April 2017) the most powerful SUV with a combustion engine in the world. The engine itself comes from the 6.4 V8 SRT, but has less displacement here. The vehicle accelerates to 100 km / h in 3.7 seconds, the top speed is stated by Jeep at 289 km / h. The first copies of the Grand Cherokee Trackhawk are expected to be delivered in the fourth quarter of 2017. In contrast to the Challenger SRT Hellcat and the Charger SRT Hellcat , the vehicle should also be officially sold in Germany from spring 2018.
