First generation (1984–1996)

In 1984 the Jeep company came onto the market with a new generation of off-road vehicles. The vehicle, which was rather small in its dimensions by American standards, was a perfect fit for Europe and benefited from the boom in off-road vehicles in the early 1990s. Initially equipped with a 2.8 l V6 engine from Chevrolet with 115 hp or a 2.5 l in-line four-cylinder from AMC with 105 hp, the Cherokee was equipped with the installation of the 4.0 l six-cylinder engine, an in-house development by Jeep, a successful model. The four-cylinder from AMC was later equipped with injection and developed 122 hp.

The output of the 4.0-liter engine was between 125 and 136 kW (170/185 PS) depending on the model year and, in conjunction with switchable all-wheel drive, automatic and approx. 1600 kg curb weight, ensured an acceleration of 0-100 km / h in just under 9-10 seconds with an average consumption of 14 to 17 liters of regular gasoline per 100 kilometers. The maximum speed of the 4.0-liter model was electronically limited to 180 km / h. The diesel variant had a small share of the total number of units of the Cherokee, initially with an engine from Renault with 60 kW (82 hp), later with an 84 kW (115 hp) engine from the Italian manufacturer VM Motori , which, however, was due to a lack of stability in the area of the Cylinder head and timing chain. The original version of the Jeep Cherokee was also available as a two-cabin pickup under the name Jeep Comanche with the same engine.

At the beginning of the 1990s, the Grand Cherokee, a larger model with a V8 engine, offered slightly better performance and significantly more interior space and ride comfort.

Second generation (1997-2001)

Starting with the 1997 model, Jeep offered a completely redesigned version of the Cherokee. The drive technology was taken over from the predecessor almost unchanged, but Jeep revised the design of the body and especially the interior. Driving comfort and background noise have also been significantly improved. On the engine side, the well-known four-cylinder with a displacement of 2.5 liters with 97 kW (131 hp) and the PowerTech six-cylinder continued to be offered. The latter developed from a displacement of 4 liters, depending on the model year, from 124 kW to 139 kW (169 PS to 190 PS). In Europe there was also a turbodiesel from VM in the program, which was also used in the Grand Cherokee at the time and developed 84 kW (115 PS) there. Five-speed manual transmissions or a four-speed automatic from Aisin / Borg-Warner were used for power transmission .

Production in China

For the Chinese market, the Beijing Jeep Corporation produced the Cherokee between 1984 and 2003 under the Beijing Jeep brand and the model names BJ 213, BJ 6420, BJ 7250 and BJ 2021.

From 2003 onwards, BAW manufactured the visually very similar Beijing Leichi based on the Cherokee platform .

The modernized successor to the Cherokee at Beijing Jeep was the Jeep 2500 with a 116 hp 2.5-liter engine, which was sold as BJ 6420 EB or BJ 2021 EB. In 2005 the BJ 2121 EC followed with a somewhat more powerful Mitsubishi engine. After production ended, the 2500 was again taken over by BAW and developed into the Beijing Qishi .

Since 2001 the model has been offered on the domestic market in the USA under the name Jeep Liberty, only in Europe and in northern Africa it is marketed under the name Jeep Cherokee . From a technical point of view, this model is not a successor to the Jeep Cherokee, but represents a new model series. The Jeep Grand Cherokee series as the successor to the Wagoneer is continued to this day. The original Jeep Cherokee was discontinued and only the name revived.

The Cherokee was initially offered in Europe as a model with selectable all-wheel drive (Command-Trac). In America, pure rear-wheel drive cars are also offered. A four-cylinder petrol engine with 108 kW (146 hp) was also available until 2006. Otherwise, in addition to the 3.7-liter V6 petrol engine, a 2.5-liter diesel from VM Motori was also offered, especially for Europe. From 2004 there was also a 2.8-liter version with a five-speed automatic and permanent all-wheel drive with a disengageable front axle (Select-Trac); the smaller diesel engine was taken out of the range.

For the 2008 model year, Chrysler presented a model based on the Dodge Nitro that was slightly larger in size. In America it was available as Jeep Liberty since the beginning of 2008, in Europe as Jeep Cherokee in autumn of the same year.

On the drive side, the Jeep Liberty is equipped with the well-known 3.7-liter V6 petrol engine, which produces 157 kW (214 hp) and 319 Nm of torque. This model is available on the US market in the Jeep Liberty Sport and Jeep Liberty Limited trim levels. You can choose between a six-speed gearshift and a four-speed automatic.

For Europe, the VM turbodiesel with common rail injection, also known from its predecessor, with the model designation 2.8 CRD is in the range. The engine develops 130 kW (177 hp) at 3800 rpm. In the sport version equipped with the six-speed gearbox it reaches 410 Nm, in the automatic version 460 Nm. In the equipment variants Limited and Limited Exclusive , the automatic is standard and also includes a hill descent aid. The all-wheel drive system (Selec-Trac II) offers the option of switching from rear-wheel to all-wheel drive both automatically and manually.

Since 2011, the Cherokee is no longer available in Europe, with the exception of Italy . Fiat Group justifies this by stating that “the car […] was not as economical to sell” as one would have imagined.

In summer 2012, the production of the Liberty was stopped because the factory in Toledo / USA had to be converted for the successor built from autumn 2013. The model, which will be available from the 2014 model year, will again be named Cherokee in North America .

Since 2013, the model has been offered again worldwide as the Cherokee , the model name Liberty has been dropped.

Originally, the market launch in the USA should take place in summer 2013. Due to problems with the 9-speed automatic, it had to be postponed again and again, so that the first models could not be delivered until the end of October.

For the North American market, the Jeep Cherokee is available with a 2.4-liter four-cylinder Fiat with 137 kW (186 hp) or a new 3.2-liter Pentastar V6 engine with 200 kW (272 hp). This is a derivative of the 3.6-liter engine known from Grand Cherokee and Wrangler. You can choose between front and all-wheel drive.

For the Russian market and the Middle East, the Jeep Cherokee is available with a 2.4-liter four-cylinder with 130 kW (177 hp) or the 3.2-liter V6 engine with 200 kW, each with a front or all-wheel drive.

The Cherokee has also been available in Germany since March 2014, with two diesels and one petrol engine on the drive side. The 3.2-liter Pentastar V6 engine with 200 kW (272 hp) is combined as standard with all-wheel drive and a nine-speed automatic transmission from ZF . Two versions of the tried-and-tested 2.0-liter Multijet from Fiat are available as diesel engines for the Cherokee, either 103 kW (140 PS) or 125 kW (170 PS). Both have a maximum torque of 350 Newton meters, with the 103 kW engine with six-speed manual transmission you can choose between front-wheel and all-wheel drive. The more powerful variant (170 hp) is coupled to the nine-speed automatic transmission with all-wheel drive.

Since July 2015, two new diesel engines with 185 or 200 hp have been available, both with a maximum torque of 440 Newton meters, whereby the 200 hp variant is only available in conjunction with the “Limited” version and the 180 hp variant is only available as a “Longitude” “Is available. Compared to its predecessor, the new 2.2 MultiJet II with 200 hp delivers 25 percent more torque and 17 percent more power with consumption reduced by three percent to 5.7 l / 100 km. The 2.0 MultiJet with 170 hp is no longer available. The 140 hp variant of the 2.0 MultiJet will only be available with front-wheel drive and a six-speed manual transmission. A new entry-level "Sport" version is also in preparation. Standard equipment includes 17-inch alloy wheels, air conditioning , cruise control and Bluetooth connectivity.

A revised version of the Cherokee was presented at the NAIAS in January 2018. It has been available in Europe since September 2018.
