Richard Hammond
Richard Mark Hammond (born December 19, 1969 in Solihull , West Midlands , England ) is a British presenter, author and journalist. Hammond became known as the co-host of the BBC Two auto magazine Top Gear , which he presented from 2002 to 2015 together with Jeremy Clarkson and James May . He also made a name for himself as a presenter with numerous television productions such as Brainiac (2003-2006), Total Wipeout (2009-2012) and Planet Earth Live (2012).
Since 2016 the Brit has hosted the car magazine The Grand Tour together with his former Top Gear colleagues Jeremy Clarkson and James May . The magazine is produced by the production company W. Chump and Sons , of which Hammond is a co-founder, and can only be streamed by Amazon Prime customers via Amazon Video .
In November 2016, Hammond started the social media website Drivetribe with Clarkson and May , which deals with automotive and motorcycle topics , and regularly publishes articles on his “Tribe” Hammond's Fob Jockeys.
Life
He has been married to Amanda (Mindy) Etheridge since 2002 and the couple have two daughters.
Career
Prior to co-hosting Top Gear, Hammond worked for various local BBC radio stations. He has worked for Radio Cleveland, Radio York, Radio Cumbria, Radio Leeds, Radio Newcastle and Radio Lancashire, among others.
His first television presentation was Men & Motors .
Top gear
Between 2002 and 2015, Hammond hosted the BBC car magazine Top Gear with Jeremy Clarkson and James May .
On September 20, 2006, he injured himself while filming the ninth season of Top Gear with a turbine-powered dragster . After seven successful trips, the right front tire of the car burst at a speed of around 460 km / h. The car overturned and dug upside down into the ground. Hammond was admitted to the intensive care unit with severe head injuries. Since the end of January 2007 he has been moderating again. The accident was shown in the first episode of the ninth season of Top Gear. The moderators then agreed not to show or mention the accident again. The accident can be seen in a cut in the last episode of the third season of The Grand Tour .
In 2008, in an interview with the UK Sunday Times , Hammond said he had returned to work far too early and is still battling the effects of the head injury. He and his wife described this experience in the book On the Edge .
Hammond joined Amazon Prime in 2016 after his time at Top Gear, along with Clarkson and May, for the new automobile show The Grand Tour .
The Grand Tour
During the filming of the second season of the show The Grand Tour , Hammond was again involved in a serious car accident on June 10, 2017. On the occasion of a demonstration run at the Hemberg hill climb in the canton of St. Gallen , he missed a tight curve in a Rimac Concept One . After a rollover, Hammond was able to save himself from the vehicle before it went up completely in flames. He only fractured his knee, and no other people were injured.
Brainiac
Until the fourth season of Top Gear , he also moderated the infotainment program Brainiac . He was the first presenter of the format before getting support from Jon Tickle and Charlotte Hudson in the second season. After the fourth season, Hammond left the format because his new exclusive contract with the BBC made a work at Sky no longer possible.
Other formats
Since 2009 he can be seen on BBC Two (on the National Geographic Channel as Hightech Inside) in the Richard Hammond's Engineering Connections series, in the connections between today's top technical achievements, such as the Airbus A380 or the Taipei 101 skyscraper , and previous developments or developments the nature and evolution that made today's achievements possible.
Richard Hammond's Crash Course has been broadcast on German broadcaster Sport 1 since September 7, 2012 .
Various programs such as Richard Hammond's Wunder der Natur and Richard Hammond's Weather Workshop are broadcast in the Terra Mater series on ServusTV .
He writes weekly columns for The Daily Mirror newspaper .
