history

Hemberg was mentioned in a document in 878 as Hemmenberch and in 1225 as Hembere . Documents from 878 onwards indicate early ownership of the St. Gallen Monastery . In 1383 the court and church set in Hemberg were transferred to the St. Johann monastery . In 1418 the bailiwick changed from the barons of Hewen to the counts of Toggenburg . In 1468 Hemberg and the rest of Toggenburg came under the rule of the Prince Abbey of St. Gallen . In the Gegenharzbuch court , Hemberg was associated with Brunnadern . 1565 Hemberg and received St. Peterzell a land rights . Together they formed the St. Peterzell Office in the Oberamt. In 1803 Hemberg became a political municipality in the Obertoggenburg district , and in 1831 in the Neutoggenburg district .

Catholic Church

The collature of the parish church, built in 1214, was at the St. Johann monastery until 1555. Church fires were recorded in 1460 and 1623. The Reformation introduced by Johannes Dörig from 1522 was canceled in 1526. Instead of the church, which was used equally , a new Protestant church was built in 1779 and a new Catholic church in 1782.

Mousseline weaving , which was founded in the 18th century and expanded in the early 19th century, and embroidery in the home industry resulted in a strong increase in population and construction activity: 80 new houses were built from 1751 to 1791. In the second half of the 19th century, the economy and population shrank due to the decline in spinning and weaving, which was only partially offset by embroidery. A modest compensation could be created in the 20th century by tourism. A high altitude and climatic health resort since the end of the 19th century, Hemberg has a protected site, two ski lifts and cross-country skiing trails. Livestock farming, the timber industry and restaurants are cornerstones of the economy.

Through a mousseline weaving and an embroidery, the population increased sharply in the 18th and early 19th centuries. After 1850, due to the worsening economic situation, the population began to decrease significantly. It has remained constant at around 900 over the past 50 years.

In 1989 the meteorologist Jörg Kachelmann bought an old farmhouse in Bächli, converted it into a high-tech weather station and founded the private weather service Meteomedia AG . The place became known throughout Switzerland. Meteomedia AG intended to expand its activities and set up a national and European meteo station with numerous new jobs in Bächli. Because this project could not be implemented due to differences with the political community, Meteomedia AG relocated its headquarters to Gais .

The automobile hill climb St. Peterzell – Hemberg, which was held from 1968 to 1990, is well known. Car races have been held annually since 2012. As part of the filming of The Grand Tour , a prototype of the Rimac Concept One was destroyed on June 10, 2017 during the demonstration run of Richard Hammond's hill climb.
