Their ownership passed to the Alt St. Johann monastery in 1180 and 1209 . The bailiwick initially belonged to the Counts of Toggenburg and from 1249 also to the monastery, which was incorporated into the prince abbey of St. Gallen in 1555 . The residents of Stein received the same rights as the Toggenburg peasants. In the canton of St. Gallen, Stein was part of Alt St. Johann from 1803 and an independent municipality from 1833.

The last big fire in Switzerland took place in Stein in 1947.

On March 29th, around 1:15 p.m., smoke was found rising from the “Ochsen” restaurant in Stein. Since a foehn storm had blown the whole week and it hadn't rained for a long time, the fire could spread to other buildings after a short time, first to the «Anker» bakery. The fire could not be stopped with a hand spray pump and water buckets; it spread towards the front laad. The Laad is an area above Stein mainly populated with farms.

At that time there was neither a motorized water pump nor hydrants in Stein . The fire brigade therefore had to lay hoses before they could start extinguishing with their hand spray pump. After a while, the Nesslau fire brigade rushed over with a motorized sprayer, but it was also unable to do anything. Fire brigades from Ebnat , Kappel , Wattwil , St. Gallen , Buchs and Rapperswil soon arrived . The Speer inn and the new milk center were rescued, but two nearby farms burned down. No humans were harmed, but not all animals could be rescued from the stables.

On the following Palm Sunday an aid committee was founded, which on the same day collected a considerable amount and natural produce. The nationwide collection campaign brought in a total of 930,000 francs, of which around 670,000 francs was used for houses and stables and the rest for a new water supply.

religion

The chapel in Breitenau, mentioned in 1280, was elevated to a parish church in 1497 . The Reformation took place from 1524 to 1531, and in 1601 the prince abbey reintroduced Catholic worship. The Reformed were in 1585 to 1711 kirchgenössig to Nesslau and later used the church in stone parity with Catholics. With the construction of the new Catholic Church in 1930, the simultaneous relationship ended.

economy

A stone arch bridge crosses the Thur, a covered wooden bridge the Wissthur. In 1905 a ski factory started production in Stein, the place became a starting point for skiers and from 1966 to 2001 the Eggli-Stiegenrain ski lift was in operation. At the beginning of the 21st century, agriculture and small businesses formed the economic focus, supplemented by tourism in the hiking and ski touring area Risi-Stockberg and on the Thur hiking trail. In 2000 about 40% of the workforce worked outside the country, the first economic sector in 2005 provided 53% of jobs in Stein.
