Bütschwil is a town and until December 31, 2012 it was a political municipality in the Alttoggenburg district and, from 2003, in the Toggenburg district in the canton of St. Gallen . Bütschwil is located between Wattwil and Wil not far from the Thur .

On January 1, 2013, the municipality of Bütschwil merged with Ganterschwil to form the municipality of Bütschwil-Ganterschwil .

geography

To the left of the Thur are the street villages of Bütschwil and Dietfurt , the hamlets of Grämigen, Tierhag, Feld, Kengelbach and Zwiselen, and to the right of the Thur Langensteig and Laufen. The neighboring communities were Ganterschwil , Lütisburg , Mosnang , Krinau , Wattwil , Lichtensteig and Oberhelfenschwil .

history

Bütschwil was first mentioned in 779 as Bucinesvilare . At that time it was a farm that was probably built by the Alemanni . The area around Bütschwil was not settled by the Romans . The farm owner donated his area to the St. Gallen monastery in 855 by means of a deed of donation , which pledged the Kehlhof to the Counts of Werdenberg in 1280 . In 1340 the lordship came to the Counts of Toggenburg . In 1475 it was bought back by the Prince Abbey of St. Gallen , which in 1468 had acquired sovereignty over the entire Toggenburg. The area of the former municipality was assigned to the courts of Bazenheid , Neckertal and Wattwil .

Parish before the merger in 2013

A chapel is mentioned in 1275. Until 1414 Bütschwil belonged to the parish of Ganterschwil and then became an independent parish. The Reformation divided the population. After 1531, most of the Reformed returned to Catholic worship; however, the church was used equally until 1778 . Bütschwil was part of the abbot in the Toggenburg War in 1712. With the integration of the surrounding hamlets, it was raised to a political municipality in 1803.

From 1850 the textile industry changed the economy, which was previously characterized by agriculture and cattle breeding: a mechanical colored weaving mill was established in Sohr and two machine embroidery mills in the village of Bütschwil. In Dietfurt, three machine embroidery shops, one each for dyeing and sizing, as well as the spinning and weaving department Dietfurt AG were created. The weaving mill, which had 600 to 700 employees at the end of the 1960s, ceased operations in 1999/2000. The rapidly growing villages of Bütschwil and Dietfurt were connected to the Toggenburg Railway in 1870. The private secondary school Bütschwil-Ganterschwil, founded in 1863, was transferred to the two communities in 1913. In 1905 a Protestant parish was founded and the church was built in the field. At the beginning of the 21st century, the textile industry only has one employer with around 30 jobs. It has lost its importance. The metal and woodworking industry, a diverse trade and agriculture now shape the economic structure of Bütschwil, which is also the location of a regional nursing home.

On November 27, 2011, votes on a community merger took place in Bütschwil and Ganterschwil . The vote was accepted in Bütschwil with a yes share of 82%. The new community was founded on January 1, 2013 and is called Bütschwil-Ganterschwil .

coat of arms

The coat of arms shows two white, entwined goosenecks on a red background. It comes from the nobles von Holzhausen , who were the ministerials of the Counts of Toggenburg. You were administrators of the Kellhof in Bütschwil for over a century . In the course of the merger with Ganterschwil, however, a new coat of arms was chosen. It shows a red bridge on a white background, built on a green background. The original coat of arms is retained.

Bütschwil is served by the Wil – Wattwil railway line with the Bütschwil and Dietfurt stations and the main road 16 Wil - Wattwil . From 2014 to 2020, the 3.8 kilometer long and CHF 200 million bypass road was built, which bypasses Bütschwil on the eastern edge of the village. The road is located between the two existing bypasses Lichtensteig and Bazenheid and relieves the town centers of Bütschwil and Dietfurt from individual traffic.
