The District Alttoggenburg was by the end of 2002, an administrative unit of the canton of St. Gallen in Switzerland . It was created in 1831 by dividing the previous district of Untertoggenburg into the district of Alttoggenburg and the "new" district of Untertoggenburg.

The Alttoggenburg district has been part of the Toggenburg constituency since 2003 . Its area - together with Ganterschwil (today part of the municipality of Bütschwil-Ganterschwil ) and the western part of the municipality of Oberhelfenschwil - is now usually referred to as the lower Toggenburg .
