history
After the Toggenburg was sold to the Abbot of St. Gallen, Bütschwil and Ganterschwil were administered by the prince abbey . In 1803 the two villages became part of the newly created canton of St. Gallen . In 1831 Bütschwil came to the Alttoggenburg district , while Ganterschwil remained in the former Untertoggenburg district . The private secondary school Bütschwil-Ganterschwil, founded in 1863, was transferred to the two communities in 1913. In 1990 the upper school community Bütschwil-Ganterschwil-Lütisburg (BuGaLu) moved into its new upper school center in Bütschwil.
On November 27, 2011, votes on a community merger took place in Bütschwil and Ganterschwil . As early as September 26, 2010, the voters of the political communities of Bütschwil and Ganterschwil approved the initiation of the unification process in a fundamental vote. The vote was accepted in Bütschwil with a yes share of 82%, in Ganterschwil the share of yes votes was 54%.
At the end of 2011, the joint supply company of the municipalities of Bütschwil-Ganterschwil and Kirchberg , the rwt regional plant in Toggenburg , took over the power supply (Elektra Lütisburg) from the municipality of Lütisburg. In 2013, however, the Lütisburg voters narrowly refused a merger with the municipality of Bütschwil-Ganterschwil.
