Dietfurt is a village in the municipality of Bütschwil-Ganterschwil in the Swiss canton of St. Gallen .
The village of Dietfurt is located on a crossing ( ford ) over the Thur , about two kilometers south of Bütschwil and about three kilometers north of the town of Lichtensteig in Toggenburg . The main road 16 leads through the village , which crosses the Thur and the Dietfurterbach shortly before its confluence with the Thur. Other roads lead from Dietfurt to Oberhelfenschwil and the hamlet of Kengelbach. The Bütschwil bypass road, opened in 2020, relieves Dietfurt of through traffic.
Dietfurt was originally characterized by agriculture, from 1850 onwards several machine embroidery shops and the Spinnerei und Weberei Dietfurt AG were established, which had 600 to 700 employees at the end of the 1960s. The Toggenburg Railway, which opened in 1870, opens up Dietfurt with one station.
The textile industry lost its importance at the end of the 20th century, and the Dietfurt AG spinning mill and weaving mill ceased operations in 2000. The only remaining textile company had around 30 employees. When production in the company in question ceased at the end of 2012, 24 employees lost their jobs. Several of the old factories are now protected cultural assets and have been converted into residential buildings.
