Eduard Mändle

Eduard Mändle (born February 11, 1936 in Geislingen ; † December 21, 2013 there ) was a German economist and rector of the Nürtingen-Geislingen University of Economics and Environment (HfWU) from 1977-2001. When he retired, he was the longest-serving university rector in the Federal Republic of Germany.

Live and act

He grew up in Geislingen and obtained his Abitur and then studied at the University of Mannheim , where he graduated as a commercial teacher in 1961 and in 1965 as a Dr. rer. pole. received his doctorate.

In 1966 Mändle was appointed lecturer at the then engineering school for agriculture and later appointed professor for economics and cooperative studies at the college, which was elevated to the Nürtingen University of Applied Sciences. From 1973 to 1977 he was Vice-Rector of the University of Applied Sciences, and he was elected Rector in 1977. He held this office for 24 years through repeated re-election. During his tenure, the number of students rose from 400 to 3,000, the number of courses was expanded from 3 to 12, a new university building was built in Nürtingen and a student dormitory was built. His special merit is the establishment of the second HfWU location in Geislingen an der Steige. The cooperative system, agricultural policy, the energy industry and the housing industry determined his academic as well as his voluntary work as chairman of supervisory boards and committees for decades.

Eduard Mändle was married to the pianist and piano teacher Erika Mändle (* 1937) and is the father of the economist Markus Mändle (* 1967).

Mändle has published a large number of scientific publications, including standard works such as Agrarpolitik (1971), the concise dictionary of cooperatives (1980), the cooperative dictionary (1992) and the housing and real estate dictionary (1997, new edition 2011; with more than 300 authors)
